AD&D 1E What is the best way to generate ability scores for 1e AD&D?

I've had one player roll 18/00 in front of everyone over the 40+ years that I've been gaming. And I semi-believe that it was just the universe messing with us.

Back in about 1982, we were making characters for a new campaign in the Boy's Locker Room and we'd all been sitting around making mock of the Strength Percentiles because they were so dang hard to get so what was the point. So my buddy, Bobby, grabs the dice that we'd liberated from the Yahtzee set and starts rolling. Bobby is one of the louder, more passionate about it and.... BANG... he rolls 18 and then 00 and then we all busted out laughing. One in a million chance and it happened while we were talking about it.

Never before and never again.

Be very careful, obviously they are listening and will adjust the Matrix accordingly.

That is weird, because when I rolled 18/00 we were in the Boy's Locker Room in school as we were getting ready for Gym class...and Bob is (one of) my middle names.

🤓

Rolling 18 on 3d6 is a 1 in 216 chance.
Rolling 00 on 1d100 is a 1 in 100 chance.
Doesn't that mean the chance is one in 21,600?
Not that hard actually. Or rather, technically not a 1 in a million chance.
What this also tells me is that for every 21,600 people, there's someone with 18/00 strength. Or to put in perspective, on our planet right now, if D&D stats were "real", there are roughly 384,956 people with 18/00 strength. Or basically the population of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in the US.

Don't forget, it's warriors only! Would weight lifters be able to get percentile strength?

I do think it would be funny if everyone in Pittsburgh were completely jacked.

A) Roll 3d6 sixty times.
B) Record the results.
C) Select 6 scores.
D) Cross them off the list.
E) Use them for your character.

Save the List.
Whenever you make a new character, go back to step C.

When all the scores have been depleted, you have won 1e.

Burn your books.

Smash your dice.

So I win 1e once I've gone through ten characters?

Hell, I had the game won by 1985.

I guess all I've been doing since then is taking victory laps.

3d6 in order.
And you have to use dice that need to be filled in with a crayon.
If you use any other die type you have to subtract 1 from all scores.
If you use dice that need to be filled in with a crayon, but haven't actually done so, you have to subtract 2 from all scores.
If you use dice that need to be filled in with a crayon, have done so, and you used a different colored crayon for each die, you add 1 to each score, but the DM gets to rearrange your stats.
