That basic conceit, that a prop allows you to see a different reality is a great idea for an RPG.I would buy a They Live RPG, if it wouldn't feel so much like reading a newspaper.

It's not that different from the Tillinghast resonator, which has surely shown up in CoC.That basic conceit, that a prop allows you to see a different reality is a great idea for an RPG.
That's a spot bit, not a core conceit, which was more what I was tlkaing about. It's not that different from the Tillinghast resonator, which has surely shown up in CoC.

With a little splash of H. Rider Haggard, I don't doubt.Wells & Verne were the core around which Space:1889 were constructed.
That sounds perfect for people who want low power, dark and gritty play and stories. I'm sure lots of people would run a game like that! It could do numbers if pitched at an OSR audience.I was thinking about this over the weekend: The base concept of MASH is basically the worst RPG experience you can make. The doctors all hate that they have lack of agency. They can't control where the plot goes; they're completely along for the ride. They just wait for conflict to come in, roll their best, and hope they don't die. Then they rest, and continue with exactly the same the next day. The odds are stacked against them, and they're expected to fail a majority of the time. And even if they level up (get promoted) they're still stuck in the same war. The show was made up of all the jokes and musings of the characters as they're stuck in the game (war), and aren't allowed to stop playing.
