What ten foot hallways really look like.

Hi All,

Just looking at some of the art from Art & Arcana and I saw something that I never really noticed before, the Dave Trampier painting from the 1st Edition PHB includes an excellent drawing of a 10ft hallway.

As I recall many of the original TSR modules used 10ft hallways with 10ft ceilings as the default, probably due to easy of mapping on graph paper. We happily used the same even when mapping the interior of buildings etc. On the second panel (back of the PHB) to the left of the front cover is an excellent drawing to scale of just what such a passage/corridor would look like.

Just thought I'd share, I love the way that every time I look at something from this game I see something new. Reminds me of the first Star Wars, every viewing a new detail emerges that deepens the experience.

A picture of a 10' high 20' wide wildlife underpass with a man walking underneath for scale. Imagine it half as wide and you have your 10x10 square.

My first roleplaying game was Das Schwarze Auge, where passageways were typically 1 metre wide. That didn't stop us from swinging our sabres and fighting side-by-side against multiple goblins and orcs, though.

That was my first contact with a 'real' RPG, as well. Before that I'd only been playing the Fighting Fantasy books (or rather 'Der Hexer vom Flammenden Berg').

We definitely didn't know exactly what we were doing and our first fight against two orcs proved to be the end of our short adventuring careers...

In my first attempt at running a game, I pitted three 1st-level Adventurers against four Trolls. It was over very quickly ...

Actually, my friends and I have been playing the old 1st edition again, with some house rules, and we're having great fun.
