I just dont view them as zombies. Plus it's clear that the breakdown of society was as much, if not a larger factor, in humanity crumbling.How is The Last of Us "not really" a zombie apocalypse thing? The explanation is mutant fungus, but it is explicitly a zombie apocalypse thing.
I don't know if it would change your opinion at all, but zombies in The Walking Dead TTRPG are treated much more like an environmental hazard than monsters that need to be killed.
