The real answer is of course Resident Evil 4. The joke answer is Metal Gear Solid 3.I have never played a Resident Evil game. Which one would you recommend to a newb who thinks shooting and stealth are more fun than puzzles?
Love a classic runthrough of the series! Last time through I tried a "living off the land" challenge and made it all the way through to a short way into FF6 by the time I lost steam. It's definitely a challenge that has more difficult earlier on and also FF6 is the easiest game in the series.Final Fantasy I and about to start II. Nostalgia that needs an itch every decade or so.
This.3) They just "pivoted" to it. So we're probably looking at a dead minimum of 3 years, more likely 4-5 before it actually comes out.
Fallout: New New York maybe?I should update my "upcoming videogame RPGs" thread at some point but I know some people here might appreciate this news:
If you can't get through for some reason, or don't care to, the news is:
1) Obsidian are making a new Fallout game.
Yes Obsidian, of Fallout New Vegas fame (and who have a lot of FO1 and FO2 vets), not Bethesda Game Studios (who made FO3 and FO4).
2) Josh Sawyer is in charge of it.
He's one of the more prominent and willing-to-talk-about-it game designers out there, and was game director (and lead designer) for Fallout New Vega (John Gonzalez was the lead writer, and Josh credits him and the other writers for a lot of what is good about NV). He used to post about RPG design on RPG.net long, long ago too so you may have spoken to him there (not sure if he ever did on any version of ENworld).
I think this would conventionally considered "very good news", but also potentially is a massive hail mary from from Microsoft/a desperate attempt to curry favour with "gamers" as a whole when they're firing 3200 game developers over the next year.
I mean, people have been saying "Why the hell doesn't MS do [exactly this - new Obsidian FO with Sawyer in charge] for literally decades, so yeah it's a little obvious in that it's essentially wish-fulfilment. Sawyer is extremely serious about making good games, sometimes to the point where he might be a little too serious, but so long as there isn't some sort of disaster along the way, this is probably going to be something rather remarkable.
The negatives are:
1) MS are terrible. They're only having to fire so many people because they got so greedy (not just for money, in fact almost more for dominance/power/control than money, which is part of why they got in so deep), so you kinda hate to see them do something smart on a certain cynical level.
2) It's likely to be MS ecosystem exclusive. That means PC and Xbox when Sony and Nintendo consoles will likely still be far more owned than MS ones. Given the timing it's likely not going to be for the current Xboxes at all either.
3) They just "pivoted" to it. So we're probably looking at a dead minimum of 3 years, more likely 4-5 before it actually comes out.
EDIT - I wouldn't be shocked if it still managed to beat Elder Scrolls 6 to market though!
4) They were working on Avowed 2, and have dropped that for this. So if you're an Avowed/Pillars fan this might not be great, and we might have seen the last of the Pillars setting*.
* = There is a small but non-zero chance Sawyer has demanded they make a Pillars 3 after this as part of him doing this but I wouldn't count on it.
EDIT - Also from the article: "Previously, Sawyer had been directing a roleplaying game that was similar structurally and thematically to Fallout but was not part of the franchise." - I think this maybe also goes under negatives, because honestly it's possible a spiritual sequel to Fallout could have been, well, better than an actual sequel because it's not tied to the same lore and aesthetics. It is interesting to find this out though because a lot of people guessed Sawyer was working on a game but almost no-one thought it was a post-apoc RPG that wasn't Fallout.
