"How did this happen?" is a totally practical question. Because until you know that, tomorrow you could wake up with gills but not lungs, or more hands instead of feet. Or an extra head that wants you put in jail for what you did last summer...

Avoiding catastrophe is very practical.

Plus, if it was done by magic, you would want to be able to do magic. Since it appeared and not grown, that is science at the level of magic anyway.

Obviously as a society we should definitely pursue figuring it out immediately. But on an individual level I am not sure of anything other than a period of novelty. But it is a trope of fiction that powerful magic also often entails powerful sleaze.
