I agree, the 1e books were great. I might just download the pdfs. Unfortuantely, my beloved 1e monster manual and fiend folio are lost in the abyss...
 

i love tony diterlizzi's work. i'm gonna go with the first two Planescape Monstrous Compendiums. :)
 

1e were nice B&W scetches, 2e was just too cartoonish for me, their unrealistic colors didn't help. 3e tries to be too fancy with their full color monsters IMO.

agreed. Unfortunately, as fate would have it I currently have the 2e and 3e Monster Manuals, but not the 1e. ;(

Interesting - I always preferred the art in both MM and MMII to Fiend Folio...

And the monsters, come to that.

to actually answer john's question :D ... i love epilogue.net and elfwood for character and monster illustrations. epilogue's quality is generally much higher, but taking the time to search through the chaff at elfwood can yield some real gems too!
