I like discord in that it's insta communication with others, but for some things it makes very little sense due to it's horrible search.

Its threading is also inferior to discussion threading on fora. I'm not sure even old mailing lists weren't better. But relatively few people seem to want to do that anyway.

Tangentially, this made me think back to Usenet in the mid-to-late 90s for rpgs and mtg. Not tons of choice about what to use, but once you knew how it worked it was pretty easy.

I tried to keep using it, largely for research purposes, until shortly after the Google Groups days started. Sadly, it was well and truly dead at that point.

I was on a couple newsgroups for music in the 90's and it was great, then they became overwhelmed with spam and the communities fractured and some moved to forums. Now forums are old fashioned.

I think that's the real problem with discord, trying to find eratta or a changes can be a pain. Otherwise, you can get an almost instant response to a query which is good.

Well, with forums it requires, well, maintaining a forum. As best I can tell that's a pain the behind on multiple grounds. And Discord is in practice more accessible to a lot of people than Reddit (which can sometimes be really weird to work with).

There's also a lot more customization with discord via built in apps,and other things.

That can be fixed with pinning, but someone has to actually do that.
