Whips and Whip-Daggers

Iscariot

First Post
I am playing a priest of Sune in a Forgotten Realms campaign. Sune's holy weapon is a whip, so my priest carries one...he has just never had much need to use it. Until our last session. And a few questions cropped up..

I know it's considered a ranged weapon, but is hand-held, with a 15' range.

Now the questions...silly as they may be.

1. Can one take attacks of opportunity with whips or not?

2. Can whips be dual-wielded?

3. Can melee feats be used with them since they are hand-held? Or do you apply ranged feats? This is my main question...the whip description seems kind of vague on such things.

I appreciate the input....and any other info that might be of use to a novice whip-user....

In reverse order:

3. In 3.0, the whip is a ranged weapon. In 3.5, it is a melee weapon that does not threaten an area. In 3.0, you can use ranged feats with them (Rapid Shot, etc), but not melee feats (Power Attack, etc). In 3.5, you can use melee feats (though, not Power Attack, since it is a light weapon), but not ranged feats.

2. Yes. In 3.0, Ambidexterity and Rapid Shot can be used, but not TWF, since in 3.0 that only applies to melee weapons. In 3.5, use TWF.

1. No. In both 3.0 and 3.5, whips do not threaten an area.

Hmm .. no actually a whip is a melee weapon (see below).

1. no, you don't threaten any squares with a whip (see below)

2. Yes, a whip is a one handed melee weapon and as such can be dual wielded

3. Since a whip is a melee weapon most melee feats works with a whip but not ranged feats

Whip: A whip deals nonlethal damage. It deals no damage to any creature with an armor bonus of +1 or higher or a natural armor bonus of +3 or higher. The whip is treated as a melee weapon with 15-foot reach, though you don’t threaten the area into which you can make an attack. In addition, unlike most other weapons with reach, you can use it against foes anywhere within your reach (including adjacent foes).

Using a whip provokes an attack of opportunity, just as if you had used a ranged weapon.

You can make trip attacks with a whip. If you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you can drop the whip to avoid being tripped.

When using a whip, you get a +2 bonus on opposed attack rolls made to disarm an opponent (including the roll to keep from being disarmed if the attack fails).

You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with a whip sized for you, even though it isn’t a light weapon for you.

Uhm no, a whip is not a light weapon, it's a one handed weapon. But just as a rapier you are allowed to weapon finesse it even though it's not a light weapon.

Good catch. I missed this in the version conversion. In 3.0, it was a small weapon (light for a medium sized character). I assumed that would make it a light weapon in 3.5, but no, it is one-handed.
