White Wolf hacked

First Post
Has anyone else received a message from White Wolf regarding their site being hacked and customer information from their online store being compromised? I just received this earlier today.

It mentions they don't think anyone grabbed credit card data, but just in case, I've cancelled my credit cards to have new ones renewed, and changed the passwords on my bank account.

Thankfully it appears that the warning has come out fairly early in the process.

Here's the message...

"Dear White Wolf Users,

Like many other well-known companies of the last few years, White
Wolf was the target of an attack by international hackers this
weekend. These hackers are now attempting to extort money from us
with the threat of posting user data to the internet. We have no
intention of paying this money, and are in contact with the FBI in an
attempt to bring these criminals to justice.

We are choosing to make this public so that our users and fans can
take any precautions needed to protect themselves. We are
recommending that if you have used your White Wolf user password as
the password for any other services you use on the internet, that you
change them immediately.

These hackers were able to exploit a flaw in our software and access
user data, this data included usernames, email addresses and
encrypted passwords. As far as we can ascertain, they were unable to
access any credit card data (nor have they claimed they did).
However, it is possible for the encrypted passwords they accessed to
be decrypted given enough time.

In addition, the site will be down for the next few days while we
evaluate some of the software we are using and take appropriate
action to help prevent future attacks.

We appreciate your patience and concern while we work through the
details of this process.

In addition to this posting we will be emailing our userbase with
this information. For correspondence regarding this, please direct
all queries to wwaccounts@white-wolf.com .

I just got 2 identical emails, as follows:

"After the server white-wolf.com has been hacked admins have refused \"to thank\" us.
We suggest you to buy database white-wolf.com all for 10 $.
In base of 65000 accounts with mails, icq, msn, personal data of users.
Mail for details whtwlfx@yahoo.com"

My main concern is that I just this afternoon bought some material from DrivethruRPG, and the forums there are inaccessible. Has anyone else received this email?

Huh... Explains that piece of junk mail I got.

I had registered for their forums/online chat cause I had needed help on something awhile back... (Email "came" in my email address but was sent from a different location.)

Anyone else get one of these spam emails?

Oops. Yeah I just posted the same thing. Do you still have your copy and what peice of software are you using to look at your email? I'm curious if the sender is the same...

Yeah, and Outlook Express. I "deleted" the file, but haven't purged it yet. Just tell me what to look for.

Ugh. Been awhile since I used that program but I have outlook so maybe it’s close to being the same…

Anyhow you want to look at the ‘internet header’ of the email. This is the part that we never see and the part that the sever cares about. (It’s basically routing instructions and a log of where it came from.)

Highlight the email (but don’t open it), left click, and look for properties or something close…

This one was:

Status: U
Return-Path: <nobody@falcon.dnsvs.net>
Received: from falcon.dnsvs.net ([63.247.85.58])

and it continues on…
