I’m not a big fan of level 1-4 intro adventures. They feel rushed, you gain new levels before you get a chance to experiment with what your character has, and oftentimes there’s an expectation that it’s only a short intro before the real thing begins. I’d rather jump into it and start level 3.
However, I love level 1-5 campaigns! Once you remove the expectation of mid to high levels and somehow convince the DM and players that they aren’t playing 25% of a game, these are really fun. Every blow, every spell, every hp counts. Players get to strategize and be inventive, perhaps even disengage* from a fight or find alternate solutions to conflict resolution other than combat.
It’s been a while since I’ve played an e5 game, and I miss it.
* knowing that D&D kinda sucks when it comes to retreat. DM needs to be quick in switching from combat to chase, or else retreating is not really an option when playing as a wargame.
