D&D General Who else was resistant to Eberron for awhile before falling for it?

From seeing your posts over the years, I know that you are very rooted in traditional and old school D&D and fantasy. I would not expect Eberron or, especially, its art to sit well with you (granted, preview art before the first book was released was a lot different than what it has turned into. I prefer that old art). You're known as the OD&D guy.

Really? OD&D is actually one of the few iterations of the game that I've never played (the other being B/X - and I've never DM'ed 1st Ed).

I mean, I like the older stuff, and I certainly feel that D&D has gradually lost a certain bite as time has gone on, but my interest in the game was actually strongest in the early 3e era than at any other time. And I'm sure I've spoken about my enjoyment of the classic 2nd Ed settings in the past, with my favourites being Spelljammer, Ravenloft, and Dark Sun (the order varies depending on my mood).

Can you speak any further on what does it for you about Eberron compared to other settings you love (literary, D&D or otherwise)?

It's been a while, but I think it was while I was in something of a pulp adventures phase, and there was something in it that I found reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the like. Plus, quite a bit of my resistance had been down to the Warforged being front-and-centre (and the perception that this was "robots in D&D"), while in the art gallery they seemed a much more minor part of proceedings.

Perhaps it wasn't you, but I recall in the early 2000s you constantly answering something like "OD&D is the only D&D" to many posts. Seemed like a half joke and half serious. Also could have been another poster. Apologies if so.

Do you still play/run Eberron today?

When 4e rolled out though and 3e stuff went really cheap I picked up a bunch of the books cheap on Amazon ($0.01 plus shipping each) and got into it more as part of what evolved into my mashup homebrew. I now also have all the PDFs.
??? I still played 3.5 for at least ten years after 4e came out and I never saw any of the titles sell for cheap. Which was really frustrating to me because I still wanted to catch up on stuff that I'd missed, so I was watching prices pretty regularly. Heck, most of it still hasn't come down in price. I've relocated since and I couldn't get my old 3.5 group back together again if I wanted to, but I'd probably still play it over 5e even today.

Maybe I'd finally grudgingly admit that Pathfinder 1e is an improvement on the same engine if I did.

Dang, you are right! It was a circle, yellow smiley face. Very similar. And both names starting with d. Apologies delericho!

I always did like Eberron. When it came out, I was specifically looking for non-traditional settings with a twist, and honestly, I don't think Eberron is all that non-traditional in the end. Dark Sun or Spelljammer was weirder. Some third party settings like Midnight or Iron Kingdoms felt more innovative than Eberron. And I still think that the high concept of Eberron was reaching for something that needed a different rule set without all the implicit D&Disms. But I keep coming back to it. I've maybe remixed it a bit to make it work for me, but it's just a pretty solid base to remix on.

When Eberron came out in 3e ... I fell for it almost immediately. It fired my imagination compared to the stuff I was used to, and it made me want to run games, rather than play them. So that's a big plus for it.
I still go back to it for some inspiration here and there, the books and KB's blog.

He retired a few years ago. I have not spoken to him since 2015ish. Just never tell him you’re sorry.

Personally, I never got into Eberron. I just never run magitech games. If I did, it would not be with D&D rules.

There was a period when a bunch of stores were dumping their 3.5 stuff at the same time. Its how I got my hardcopies of the MM III-V, the Fiendish Codexes, and the Lords of Madness too. Since I was running pathfinder at the time and not 4e it was a huge trove of 90% compatible material to draw from as a DM.
