D&D General Who is your mad wizard monster maker?

Several....

The Black Star Chimerists are a group of chimera, owlbear, scorpion bat, creators obsessed with body manipulation and mutation.

The Ancients/Eldar are responsible for the apocalyptic mage wars, they created demihumans (beast/human hybrids) of all sorts of grotesque and powerful natures for their armies, of which many have bred true (they may or may not know that is their origin);
  • Rakasta (cat people)
  • Froglocks
  • Naga-kin
  • Saurians
  • Tengu/Kenku
  • Shifters
In a super hero campaign, the group's favorite villain was Dr Botany, a plant cross breeding monster creator that wants to destroy civilization and replace people with plants.

In my primary homebrew, the likes of wizards can only create one-off monstrous creations. It takes a god to create or endow a race/creature to live past an individual creation.

In my games Owlbears and griffons and the like are naturally occurring (and the same Genus), Sea-lions and Sea-wolves are also natural creatures, whereas Centaur, Satyr and Perytons are Fey/Spirits.

For Chimera I took the idea from one of the Call of Cthulhu bestiaries that Chimera were a result of an abberation that absorbed other creatures and attempted to replicate them but became unstable as they feed, thus they began manifesting a chaotic mix of parts including multiple heads, lion claws, goat legs and dragon wings.

I also used the idea of aberrant flesh infecting people to create a few mutant humanoids based on Mongrelmen with extra eyes or limbs, crab claws or abberrant musculature. There was even a village of them hiding out in a swamp
