Why are warlocks described as "hungry for feats"?

Felon

First Post
Just found out the DM wants us to make new characters tonight, and I am considering a warlock (or maybe a witch, for reasons I won't get into heh). I've heard that warlocks are described as having tough choices when it comes to feats. What are the common feats needed to enhance a warlock's effectiveness? Is there a no-brainer 1st-level choice?

Personally, when I made one I found it was just the opposite. I was unable to come up with any clear cut choices, there are good ones for them but nothing that really knocked my socks off.

Good Warlock Feats

Some promising options:

You're going to be making a *lot* of ranged attacks over your career. Point Blank and Precise Shot are very popular.

You're going to be giving people a lot of saves against secondary effects of eldritch blasts. Ability Focus (Eldritch Blast)

You have a very narrow range of abilities. Extra Invocation (once you can get it, 6th minumum) is always a good option.

SR is as much a problem for you as for any other magical character, perhaps moreso because you can't just buff the allies when you can't get through SR. Spell Penetration and Greater Penetration call out to be taken.

Any of the spell-like ability metamagic feats also look attractive. Empowered Eldritch blast 3/day? Maximized?

You still might want any other type of feat that another spellcaster could take. You might still want Combat Casting.

That's without going into secondary book feats. I know that there are some very popular warlock feats from BoVD and Libris Mortis.

Know of any particular ones?

Thanks for the advice so far.

Point Blank Shot (+ Precise Shot, if human)? ;)

Ability Focus for the Eldritch Blast is also great, if you learn some of the resistable eldritch essences (especially the greater ones have a few nice choices).

Other good ones are Maximize Spell-Like Ability from Complete Arcane and Quicken Spell-Like Ability from the Monster Manual 3.5 (the BoVD versions of these feats are from 3.0 and do not work in 3.5 anymore!).

I find it much harder to decide on the invocations, than on the feats, really. :)

Bye
