Why HD-DVD will win the Format War (For mature audience ... and 14-year-old boys)

Porn has and will continue to fuel most new technologies. The porn industry is by far the earliest adopter of most new technologies: VHS, DVD's, the internet, streaming video, etc. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

If it doesn't have Disney and Pixar, I don't want it. Heck, there was a PS3 at Wal-Mart the other day, when I saw that the only games available were sports-related and shoot-em-ups, I lost interest immediately.

Why oh why am I getting Betamax flashbacks.

I actually would like to see a device that plays both HD-DVD and blu ray (like the +/- readers), but I guess I'm dreaming.

I once read an article that stated Betamax failed b/c it wouldn't allow adult content.

Betamax did have porn. Back in '84-'85 we used to rent from a video store that wasn't especially careful with where they put what, and even though I was 10 at the time I could see they had quite a selection in both formats. :o

It failed, finally, in competition to digital camcorders, but up until the late 90s it dominated a good bit of the professional camcorder business - applications like news crews and such. Of course, if you're referring to the consumer market - and I'm sure you were - the primary reasons Betamax failed were that consumers liked the longer VHS tapes more than the improved image quality of Betamax was worth to them, and that JVC was much freer about licensing the VHS technology than Sony was with Betamax.

I know of at least one company down in Cali that has solved whatever "hurdles" were in the way of burning blu-ray and HD-Dvd formats to the same disc, or burning a disc in a way either could read (not sure which). Sadly, it will likely not garner the support of EITHER side in this battle.

While that article has been spread around a lot by anti-Sony people (Sony bashing seems to be the in thing lately), it's apparently not true

http://www.stereophile.com/news/011507pron/

"The news was quite different at the AVN Expo, where Digital Playground, a studio that embraced Blu-ray at the 2006 Expo, claimed that, because Sony was preventing the release of XXX-rated discs, it had chosen to go with HD DVD. (Go here for Heise online's interview with DP's Joone, if you read German.)

According to an article in Ars Technica, Joone's contention is disputed by the Blu-ray Disc Association BDA). AT quotes Marty Gordon, vice chair of the BDA US Promotions Committee and vice president of the Philips Electronics Hollywood Office: "There is not a prohibition against adult content. The BDA welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, particularly those from the content industry. We look forward to working with any content providers interested in providing their audience with [the] best possible high definition home entertainment experience." "

And plus, conspircy theories about Sony are pretty silly, considering they don't control the Blu Ray format. Yes, they are one of the companies behind it, but there are a bunch of others as well (Matsushita, Pioneer, Phillips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung).
