D&D 5E (2024) Wild Magic Sorcerer is Best Sorcerer Subclass

The OP and anyone else who things that Draconic Sorcerer is not the best subclass, because analyzing who does the most damage or gets the best spells completely ignores all the turns when their Sorcerers are doing nothing because they're Dying, while the Draconic Sorcerer keeps fighting due to their higher AC and Hit Points.

Ah gotcha. Ive seen a lot of Dragon Sorcerers in action. They're really good.

I don't even think Draconic is in the top 2 in terms of resilience. I think Divine Soul and Shadow beat Draconic 6 ways to Sunday when it comes to survivability.

Divne Soul: Sanctuary, Death Ward, Favored by the Gods, Unearthly Recovery and empowered Healing Word (or quickened empowered Cure Wounds)

Shadow Sorcerer: Strength of the Grave, Shadow Walk, Umbral Form

These things are way better at keeping you standing than the AC and hit point bonus Draconic Sorcerer offers. They also synergize with feats and races better.

Your thoughts on empower spell in general?

Shadow Sorcerer:
Not convinced about this.
Strength of the Grave,
Getting up on low hp usually leads to going straight back down again.
Shadow Walk,
Works every time, apart from when you really need it.
Umbral Form
If you reach level 18 at all, it's only going to be for a tiny fraction of the game.

I agree that draconic is fairly meh unless you are playing solo though. If you really want better AC or hp you can get that with your species choice. And damage focus aint great for a caster.

Opportunity cost..

Species with extra spells are also nice to have.

Opportunity cost favours relying on you team for defence.

It's the issue with Divine Soul of course (aside from not yet getting a 5.5 update). If it uses it's spell slots to keep itself alive it aint contributing.

Yeah tgsrs an advantage for Drsgon Sorcerer.

Its not amazing but its nice.

You might have thought a Clockwork sorcerer would have good survivability, but we have one of those in the current party and he goes down so often we are thinking of changing his name to Kenny.

I think "easy to play" is how I would describe draconic. Wild magic is a bit fiddly. My personal preference is Aberrant Mind.

I was not talking about Empowered Spell. Divine Soul Sorcerers have a 6th level ability called empowered healing which gives them the ability to replace dice on their healing using sorcery points. It is similar to empowered spell, but works on healing and has no cap on the number of dice. It is not great, and I would not get it as a metamagic if it was a metamagic, but since it is a subclass ability you would obviously use it.
