Will there ever be another Marvel or DC superhero RPG?

One of my group's plans to tide us over until 4e is to run a Mutants & Masterminds campaign. In putting material together, I can't help but think how much easier it would be if there was some licensed content for DC or Marvel. I was always hoping Green Ronin would be able to secure such a license, or that Wizards would get around to it. I wonder what the obstacles are.

At one point in time, GR was doing development work for BI when they acquired the DC license. Nothing has been heard about that for, shoot, a couple years now I think, so I'd assume the project was dead. Black Industries doesn't mention the press release anymore and their 2008 schedule mentions nothing about it.\

Marvel might not care about tabletop gaming since (I think) Cryptic and now probably NCSoft is working on their branded MMORPG.

In general it seems that neither Marvel nor DC wants to license to a third party's system; they'd rather have their own branded system.

Marvel has "The Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game." Or did, at least, I don't recall how long ago I picked this thing up.

d20 it ain't, however.

My group took two sessions before we finally grokked the MURPG.

But once we got into the zone, I enjoyed some of the best gaming I've ever had in my life.

Of the dozens of campaigns I've seen end due to outside factors, losing our MURPG game is the one that stings the most.

I believe it's my favorite game.

Many years ago TSR published a Marvel roleplaying game, the rules were very simple but we had fun with it, don't know where you could find it and if you did not sure if it'd be worth purchasing.

That was Marvel SAGA, designed by Mike Selinker. We loved that game; until Mutants & Masterminds came out, it was my superhero game of choice.

Marvel Super Heroes was first published in 1984 by TSR. Jeff Grubb wrote it.

Marvel SAGA, or Marvel Super Heroes Adventure game was published in 1990.

In my experience the first game (later updated in an Advanced version) is the one that people keep dragging out and trying to get some use of 20+ years later. Well, that and no one I knew ever got the SAGA edition ;)

True! And I should have thought he was referring to the first edition. I have both, but only got the 1e game relatively recently. It's great fun.
