Wine, women and song...

Well, one out of three anyway.

What are the effects of alcohol in the game?

Background: There's a spell in Sandstorm that makes someone thirsty, to the point that they'll gulp down anything they can get their hands on, and even attack their allies to get it.

So what happens if the guy downs a skin full of wine? Brandy or whiskey? Some of the legendary brews such as "Dwarven dark ale" or "Orc draughts"?

IRL I'd expect somewhere between inebriation and death by alcohol poisoning, but as we all know, game rules and reality are only thinly related.

We usually let the dice decide, and the situation. PCs get drunk rather often in our campaigns.

Before there is poisoning, the PC usually passes out.

In my campaign, all of the alcoholic drinks are named after specific spells, with weird little side effects tangentially related to the spell. (You do NOT want to drink Stinking Cloud or Delayed Blast Fireball.) DCs are set relative to the spell levels, with a cumulative penalty. (So if you have three Fireballs, the DC for the 3rd one'd be 19. That's assuming that the brewer doesn't get an Int bonus, because that would be weird and involve too much extra math for what's essentially a little campaign color every few sessions.)
