Setting is a "standard" D&D campaign. The party already has a fighter, cleric, and rogue. Which would be the better 4th member of the team: a wizard or a sorcerer?

Neh, much like the Barbarian/Fighter split, this distinction makes little difference to me. Six of one, half dozen of another.

All these polls are much to vague. What kind of party is this? Where are they? What do they do for a living? Who do they fight? If it's a complete abstraction, there is no interesting way to answer that question: you can only state which class you prefer.

I bet this is going to be the most animated of your polls :)

I give my vote to the Wizards only because the Sorcerer is quite frustrating in the delay of getting spells of higher level: he is already one level late, and when he learn his first "next level" spell, the Wizards already knows at least 4.

PS Before you make your next poll about the Rogue, think carefully of which class you are going to compare it against :]

I voted Wizard. I like quicker spell level progression rather than more spells per day. Spontaneous casting isn't that big a deal to me either, any experienced player can figure out what spells they need to memorize each day.

Personally, I think Wizards have more plot hooks to kill the party with ... er ... I mean, INVOLVE the party with. But sorcerors are better if you have a new-ish player.

I don't exactly discourage use of sorcery in my game (I let players play whatever they want, even if it goes against the game setting, it's their playtime too afterall), however I don't create spiffy organizations for them like I do for wizards and I have very few NPC sorcerors.

In a game with a normal ammount of money flow and magic items is going to make both classes equally good at handeling all the bases, however, in a lower magic or tighter reward game, a wizards flexability is best.

I can only speak for my personal campaign.

Wizards - the extra versatility (number of spells known) is necessary IMC.

Wizard

I prefer the flexibility that the wizard class has to offer in spell selections, and the balance decision behind the fact that Sorcerers don't reach 2nd level spells until 4th level still puzzles me.

Sorcerer...you get to hand pick the spells you want and it can really help define a character concept and set a really cool theme.
