Wolf animal companion as a mount?

Is this an insane way to do business as a Druid?

Assuming that a wolf animal companion advances in size with its bonus hit die (subject to intense debtae on another thread), could the wolf be a mount for a medium sized druid?

I was originally thinking of being an elf druid to manage the ranged combat duties, but the reduced Con was too much of a penalty in my eyes when looking at wildshaping later. So human it is (bonus feat and skill points are nice).

At 3rd level of Druid, the wolf would be 4HD and progress to size large. Assuming it has been trained (or would be trained) for a general purpose of Combat Riding could the druid use it as a mount in combat? I was thinking about taking the Mounted Combat and Ride By Attack feats for my human Druid.

This achieves 3 things. Firstly, would allow a hit and run approach to keep the druid (and wolf) out of harm's way. Second, Mounted Combat would let you protect the wolf from possibly one strike per round. Thirdly, increased movement rate (50ft).

On a Handle Animal training question, as a wolf has the Scent special ability and Track as a bonus feat, does it need to be trained in 'track' to follow a scent presented to it? (see the dog entry under animals as another example).

If it increased in size (IMO, it wouldn't) then sure, you could use it as a mount. Even if it doesn't increase in size, you could just wait a few levels and get a dire wolf companion instead.

Don't forget the -5 to ride checks for unusual steeds.

Got a druid halfling with cheetah mount IMC... 500ft per round are sick!

Why would a wolf be an unusal steed, when a riding dog is not?

I see your point..but where does the line get drawn? At some point you have to say that a particular mount is unusual.

I can see that a Giant Eagle or a Dire Bat are very simply unusual mounts. Most quadrapedal, land based animals can easily be said to be similar to a horse or riding dog.

When you first take the Ride skill, I believe that you choose the kind of animal you know how to ride (IE, canines, horses, elephants and mammoths, etc.), and all others are unusual. Is this so?

Well, lots of land animals would be uinusual... riding a bear would be different, their gait is not that of a horse or dog. Same with riding the dire version of small animals like badgers or weasels. I'm split on whether a hunting cat would be unusual

Depending on climate, a camel would be unusual. Anything that flies is unusual. Giant insects are definitely unsual.
