XCrawl Character Build ??s

Hey Folks!

The Source in MN is holding an Xcrawl competition that will be 8 sessions long this summer. My weekly group is going to enter the competition and we were looking at character design. We'd like to use our group (LSIG) but they would be converted to Xcrawl PCs. You can use core 3.5 books including the Complete books. The judges are looking at level 5-7 for PCs. Here's the rundown:
Dwarven Cleric (of a martial bent)
Gnomish Cleric (a generalist ranged combat character)
Gnomish Wizard (maybe a little rogue thrown in)
Gnomish Rogue (possible Shadowdancer)
Elven Ranger (more than likely, but this character is up for grabs)
Fighter (likely something half orc in flavor with a sharp piece of metal)
The gnome rogue may not make it and we'll probably be assigned another PC. I would like to know some good munchkin tricks (spells, feats, and skills). IMC we don't power game, so we are outclassed by the min/maxers when it comes to PC design. I'm sure we could design something more effective if we started from the ground up, but we like our PCs. Thanks for your time!

For those that don't know, Xcrawl is a professional sport in the modern world. The setting is contemporary with fantasy races and dungean crawling is televised. DJs (dungeon Judges) create dungeons and teams go through them. There's TV cameras, fans, chainsaws, and other sundry fun to be had.

But it's still a game, right? ;)
No actual TV cameras (and chainsaws ;)). :p

About your characters, as a more general advice, I'd try to make them specialists in one field, maybe one generalist, and try to remove most weaknesses from the characters.

Bye

If you are not looking for powergame munchkin builds, then what are you looking for? You want munchkin tricks without powergaming? hmmm Tell us about the DJ and what the tournament both in and out of game are like.

Without knowing more, I would suggest a Lens of Detection and Goggles of Minute Seeing for the Rogue. Traps are such a @#$@##^%#$% in X-Crawl, and our rogue developed a rep for botching his search roll over and over. The metagame benefit to having a high search is that you can decide what to do about the trap. You don't want to always disarm the trap; that is boring. But since some traps are nastier than others, your rogue can decide whether to pretend he doesn't know the trap is there and trigger it anyway. The above is assuming that the crowd is a factor. By powergaming a crowd control character, you can build up some serious mojo. I played the high charisma, X-Crawl feated out crowd character and got us mojo all the time, which we need to survive.

I'll post more when I get more info. Some munchkin things might detract from the both in and out of game judges, so I'm holding off.

One quick thought tho: Bribe the cameraman with real money. Sometimes you can get better footage out of a cameraman that way. Oh, and don't throw a wyvern stinger into the crowd, killing a little kid in the process. That is bad, and your half-orc might be executed as a result. Not that the wyvern incident ever happened.....

.

I am looking for Power Gaming! I'm saying that my group doesn't practice it, so I don't have any experience in optimal character build. It's 8 weeks 8 homemade crawls 8(likely) different DJs. I'm intrigued by this mojo character you speak of. We haven't played any xcrawl, but we just purchased the xcrawl hardcover so we are learning a bit about the system.
