Yes, I do seem to have answered the question that is: what were they thinking when they made Appendix E?

Recall the second post in this thread, where I said you were overthinking it, and you might want to consult the basic XP grid?

Before using the xp grid exclusively, however, it's a worthwhile exercise to expand the lists of SAs and EAs to catch some of the somewhat-common abilities monsters have that weren't initially included e.g. aging, psionic use, resistances/immunities, and so forth.

That said, the few times I've gone through the grid for xp for something that turned out to be in Appendix E, the results were usually pretty close.

What isn't always close are some of the xp values listed in monster write-ups in published modules. Some of the numbers I see there are just nuts, be it too high or too low.
