For you melee mavens, here you can find an essay on weapon motion and impact. Be sure to check out the articles on sword weight and sword cutting as well.

How would you account for user skill when determining damage?

Not usually.

I can appreciate a flair for the melodrama and even a touch of realism, but there is a point when you starting rolling Reflex saves to see if your character trips while walking, or Will saves hearing his aunt drone on about the family farm, where you realize you're going a little too far.

In short, I have combat rolls determine flavorful descriptions, not the other way around.

If this weren't ENWorld I'd hurt you.

My question re character skill and damage done is quantitative, not qualitative. That is, how much extra damage would extra skill give? A +1 to damage for how many pluses in BAB?

Cool, let's meet in a parking lot, I could always use the extra cash :D

If you would have presented that initial idea, i would not have been so sardonic. Clicking on the link and seeing a multipage essay/article on the damage inflicted by swords at certain angles was a bit...overwhelming.

But then again, doesn't it depend on the campaign, weapons used, materials used in making those weapons, monsters fought, how the DM plays those monsters, a stroke of good or bad luck...etc

And what if they're not even using a sword? :p

So many variables to account for with the method in the first post ^

What gave you the idea I was talking about describing damage? What part of the question I posed at the end of the original post said anything about describing damage? You jumped to a conclusion and gave no thought to any alternative. Not wise.

Well, I'd let people trade a +1 to hit for a +1 to damage (+2 with a two handed weapon), provided they have a fe... oh wait. That's a core rule already. :p

I was thinking along the lines of a +1 to damage for every +4 in BAB. But only for fighters, rangers, paladins, and clerics. Rogues would only get the bonus on a backstab, while the other classes would get no bonus.

Why not Barbarians and Rogues?

Rogues get a great skill-set and Barbarians are naturally tough and have honed their instincts during survival, surely they would be able to enjoy the same benefit?
