This is an archived index to various recovered parts of Eric Noah's old site.  Back in 1999/2000, before the days of social networking and personal blogs, before Facebook and Google+ and Twitter, Eric Noah's website was THE place to go for news and rumours about the upcoming D&D 3rd Edition game.  The internet was a very different place.  This is inended to be a sort of "museum piece" - a slice of RPG history from an era past.  - Morrus.

News from May 2001:

May 31, 2001

Reviews:

  • RPG.net has posted reviews of Dungeons (AEG), Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, Madness in Freeport (Green Ronin), To Stand on Hallowed Ground (Fiery Dragon), and Legends & Lairs modules Raid on Tonwell and The Fifth Sepulcher (Fantasy Flight Games).

D20 System News:
  • Monte Cook's New Imprint -- Malhavoc Press: DMG author and D&D Third Edition co-designer Monte Cook has established Malhavoc Press, a new publishing company for the D20 System. Monte will be publishing electronic-only products, starting with The Book of Eldritch Magic, a 36-page .pdf file that sells for $5 and is available now. You can read more about the company and Monte's plans here.
  • Atlas Games has announced on their Feng Shui Noticeboard that they have contracted Robin Laws (Feng Shui's author and frequent Dragon contributor) to write a D20/Feng Shui crossover scenario. It will apparently include dual stat blocks for both games. Atlas is aiming to have this out at the same time the Oriental Adventures sourcebook hits the stores in the fall. (thanks to Dave and Christopher for the scoop)
  • Fantasy Flight Games is apparently going to publish Mythic Races, a hardcover book with "30 new cultures, races, and classes for character creation, describing their history myths, gods, special feats, equipment, and new prestige classes." Releases in August. (thanks to Sean A. Veira for the scoop)

New in the Conversion Library: Adventures -- The Accursed Tower; Classes -- Archer and Swashbuckler prestige classes; Dragonlance -- Dragonlance characters; plus updates to a few files.

Message Board Roundup: Seems like we haven't done this in a while...
  • Sean Renyolds on the official Forgotten Realms boards:
    • on the new FR map: The new map has been altered to allow for curvature of the planet, and to allow us to scale things somewhat better (the shape of Faerun is such that fitting the old version on a poster map, including chult, resulted in about 1/4 of the map being nothing but water ... by trimming some out of the Shaar we were able shift Chult up slightly which allowed us to get the map we have now, which doesn't waste so much print space on empty water). The new map is correct and what we're using from now on.
    • on the Beast of Xvim: ...they now exist as "beasts of Bane," with the same power.
    • on some FR monsters not in FRCS
    • responding to a misprint in Dragon #281: The character should not have those spells. The feat and the prestige class do not grant access to [darkness] spells from other class lists.
    • on subrace favored class: (Sub-race: favored class). Moon Elf: Wizard. Sun Elf: Wizard. Wild Elf: Sorcerer. Wood Elf: Ranger. Drow, Female: Cleric. Drow, Male: Wizard.
    • on archmage/heirophant and the Livingcity guidelines: Rich [Baker] changed the archmage to make it more archmage-ee, and left the hierophant alone to make the two classes more different.
    • on raise dead and faith in realms: 1) In FR, _all_ of the gods have walked the earth as recently as 14 years ago. Anyone in Faerun who doesn't believe in the gods is an idiot. 2) We wanted to reflect the active involvement of the deities and their reliance upon worshippers. 3) We already have a precedent of what happens to the Faithless and the False. We implemented it. 4) We allow several outs. First is the 1d10 day "grace period." Second is the character's option to choose a patron at death. Third is that wish or miracle will always restore the character to life despite the lack of a patron.
  • Rich Baker on the new FR Map: We changed the map for one reason: To deliver the best value for the money.... it was all about showing the best, most detailed map of Faerun we could show. We opted to redraw the map and execute some changes to parts of the geography we didn't think people were using much in order to make the rest of the map as good-looking and DM-friendly as possible.
  • Scoopers: Charwoman Gene, The Shadow of My Former Self, Dorain.

Official Website Updates: What's new at WotC?
  • Forgotten Realms character Elaith "The Serpent" Craulnober is previewed.
  • A neat overview of the process of designing the maps for the FR setting.
  • A new Map-A-Week.
  • Scoopers: Jerre, Angelsboi.

Rules Clarifications: Here's a smattering of rules-related news...

  • In the FR book the cleric spell Anyspell lets a cleric cast an Arcane spell, but it says, "When you cast the Arcane spell it works just as though cast by a wizard." Does that mean you suffer the same chance of Arcane Spell Failure as a wizard does when wearing armor? Yes, it does. (Source: WotC Customer Service; scooper: Gerard)
  • Can Spell Immunity be used to make one immune to psionic attack modes? Spell Immuntiy affects spells, not psionic powers. Otherwise, just use the power's level. "Levels" for attack modes are:
    • Mind Thrust: 1
    • Ego Whip: 2
    • Id Insinuation: 2
    • Psychic Crush: 3
    • Mind Blast: 5
    • (Source: Skip Williams; scooper: Scot)
  • How long does the deafness caused by a Thunderstone last? Permanent until cured. (Source: Skip Williams; scooper: Oren Douek)

RPGA Events at GenCon -- Schedule Corrections: Piratecat sends along this information from Michelle Sharp about RPGA events running at GenCon this year:
  • ...there are essentially a few errors in the pre-reg book. ... Here are the errors:
    • Primary errors surround the LC Benefit. Note that the LC Benefit WILL run slots 1, 4, 6, and 12 not slots 1, 3, 7 and 11 as listed in the pre-reg book.
    • Another error is the LC Feature. The first round of the LC feature WILL NOT run slot 7 or 9. All sessions of round 1 run on Thursday.
  • Piratecat himself also notes that the National Championship event has been cancelled.

Kalamar Errata: Here's an official correction to the Kindgoms of Kalamar book:

Kingdoms of Kalamar core setting, p91

This information goes in the section for Cities of the Elos Desert/Alnarma/Temples where the text says "(detail priests as well)"

Alnarma's Clerics

Subjugator Seldril Mindreb of the Temple of the Overlord is one of Pel
Brolenon's principal agents in this "independent" city. The cleric spends
little time performing religious duties. He occupies the late morning giving
orders in the form of polite requests (followed by reminders of size of the
Brolenese fleet) to Shiseth and Rulam, the militia commander. After an hour or two of arguably challenging work, he retires to the slave market, where he perpetually seeks new domestic slaves to replace the ones he knows will bore him soon.

The temple's real work (and the actual trusted agent of the Theocrat) is
under the guiding hand of Slave Master Herasten Dobril. Herasten is a master actor, subservient with his senior, loyal to the Theocrat, and fiery and demanding with the faith's followers. His orations are thundering blasts that motivate even the most placid listener into ardent worship. His
followers are very dedicated, and they provide him with news, contacts, and resources from throughout the city.

Seldril Mindreb LE Brandobian Cleric 7
Herasten Dobril LE Brandobian Cleric 9

D20 System News:

  • Read up on the core classes in Traveller D20 at the Traveller RPG website. (thanks to Ronaldo for the scoop)
  • OmegaOdd's Random d20 has reviewed To Stand on Hallowed Ground (Fiery Dragon).
  • From Mystic Eye Games: The next free monster is up for download. It is called the Dream Elemental and we think you will love it. Our web enhancements for The Pit of Loch-Durnan Continue with a new item titled "The Denizens of Loch-Durnan". Vol 1 features a few of the inhabitants in much more detail and with color illustrations. In addition, there is also a small bit of errata. There will be more volumes of this that will continue to add depth to the local populace. This will allow DM's to continue to use the area of Loch-Durnan regularly. On a final note, we will be adjusting our release schedule a bit. I believe we are starting to get the hang of the time frames we need to complete a project. We are back to releasing Mystic Warriors next, in July with our core book to be released now in August. We are planning to follow that up
    with
    Nightmares & Dreams II!

Prestige Class Contest Delay Explained: You might recall that WizOs from the WotC message board community were running a prestige class contest on their boards shortly before they melted down late this winter. And you may realize that the contest has been over for some time but no results have been announced. So is it a conspiracy? Not exactly. There are good reasons, as explained in this thread by "WotC_Mel" (thanks to S. Rex for the scoop):

The games that get run on boards and chat are all put on by volunteers (WizOs) who moderate these community elements. Things like Totally Twisted Trivia, UnCon, Boards Contests, In-character contests. All of it gets made up by and executed by volunteers who do it for the entertainment of the people who hang out in these places.

...WizO Roc and the boards team NEVER expected to have so many entries on this contest. When our last board exploded ... we had low to moderate traffic. Moving them to a much more accessible and public format has tripled this traffic. So, the team has had much more to monitor, the contest was bigger than anticipated, and once again, they are volunteers doing this once they get home from work, after dinner, and before bed. So cut them a break. Please.

Going forward I will ask the volunteers to please allocate resources to handle things more efficently or else not run things like this. But this contest was started when we had a much smaller readership and the boards had adequate volunteers to moderate them all. I hope you can appreciate that without it being a conspiracy or even symptomatic of Wizards as a corporate whole.

D20 System News:
  • AEG is apparently putting together another non-fantasy D20 System game. Series Archer is a spy game apparently due fourth quarter this year. You can preview two classes and listen to a radio drama related to the game at their website. (Thanks to Nick Lalone of RPGNews.com for the scoop)

The Slayer's Guide to Hobgoblins will be in the shops within Europe and the UK from tomorrow onwards, with the Slayer's Guide to Gnolls following exactly one month after. If you are in the US, it is just one month more to go to Mongoose's entry to your part of the market, but fear not - after the Slayer's Guide to Hobgoblins, you will be getting the Slayer's Guides to Gnolls and Centaurs in the same month! (thanks to Jerre for the scoop)

Reviews:
  • AtFantasy.com has posted a review of To Stand on Hallowed Ground (Fiery Dragon).

Illumination, Concealment and Low-Light Vision: When it's dark outside, that darkness may provide concealment. But how dark is dark, and how much concealment is provided, and what if a character has low-light vision? Scooper Shane Henry ran these questions by Skip "The Sage" Willams and came up with a little summary that Skip calls "good enough to steal."
  • Full, Gibbous, or Half Moon + Clear Sky = 0% Miss Chance
  • Full, Gibbous, or Half Moon + Overcast Sky = 'Moderate Darkness'; 10% Miss Chance (0% with LLV)
  • Crescent Moon (whether Clear or Overcast) = 'Moderate Darkness'; 10% Miss Chance (0% with LLV)
  • New Moon or Before Moonrise (whether Clear or Overcast) = 'Near Total Darkness'; 40% Miss Chance (20% with LLV)

New in the Conversion Library: Adventures -- Secret of the Slavers Stockade (module A2) and Night of the Vampire; Monsters -- demon lords; Monster Collections -- added link to Vulcano's Reach. Plus updates to several files.

Poll: Most of you (45%) want to pick up the Forgotten Realms setting right away, though some of you (16%) find the price to be a barrier to immediate acquisition. Many of you (20%) will not be buying the book at all. And some of you (13%) will wait to read reviews. See complete results in the poll archive.

The new poll asks about D20 System products. Rather than asking, "What is there too much of?" I'm going the other way: What is there not enough of? If you select "Something Else," feel free to mention what in this thread on my message board.

May 24, 2001

FR Release Situation Update: I've received several reports of game shops that are now going to be able to sell the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting starting tomorrow (May 25). Apparently WotC and distributors have been working hard to make sure that stores get their supplies in time for this weekend. Still, it's always a good idea to phone ahead, as some still likely won't have the book but some will. Even if you called your favorite store yesterday you might want to call again today -- a lot can change in 24 hours, as we've seen with this situation.

Hosted Site News:
  • Claudio Pozas has posted an intriguing look at how he creates his incredible artwork.
  • An update from EN World:
    • We have taken a look at Touched By The Gods by Atlas Games, and interviewed John and Michelle Nephew about the product. We have also looked at Umbragia: Realms of Shadow (Jagged Edge Games) and have interviewed both the designer, KD Ladage, and the artist, Don McInturff.
    • All bugs in the spell submission system have been fixed, and those spells with missing text have been edited thanks to your emails. There is just under one month left of the spell competition, so if you want to get your hands on the entire Freeport Trilogy (the first adventure, Death in Freeport, is a signed copy), remember to enter your spell on our spell submission form before June 15th!
    • You also have until June 15th to enter the Midgard: d20 Adventure Magazine competition for Best Interlude (short adventure).
    • In preparation for our move to RPGPlanet we are rebuilding EN World and adding a few new features. We welcome your ideas and suggestions, and have created a thread here on Eric's message boards for that purpose.
    • We have had 17 publishers so far confirm that they will be entering the EN World d20 System Awards (the ENnies), so it looks like we will have our work cut out for us. The date of the ENnies ceremony itself has been moved forward a few days to avoid a clash with GenCon, and will now be Sunday, July 29th.
    • Make sure you pop into our d20 Publishers Forum, which has been flooded with publishers all willing to answer your questions, drop hints about forthcoming products and respond to your criticisms!

D20 System News:
  • From Fiery Dragon:
    • Fiery Dragon now has forums at Sword & Sorcery's website.
    • Fiery Dragon has announced some new products for 2002:
      • January 2002: Counter Collection II - d20 accessory.

      • May 2002: Counter Collection III - d20 accessory.

  • If you're a fan of the Star Wars D20 game you will want to drop by SWRPG Network to read an interview with JD Wiker, author of Secrets of Tatooine.
  • From Dark Portal Games:
    • Our first release White Robes, Black Hearts: Enigma of the Arcanexus is coming along nicely. Unfortunately the release date will need to be pushed back until we get our business license sorted out with the state of Alaska. The module is going to be huge. We still haven't compiled the entire thing into the master document, but it is currently over 100 pages in length. This will be reduced once we reduce the font size and do the layout, but people can expect something large, which has been a major undertaking. Despite the sheer volume of material that is going into this it is being playtested and thoroughly edited so that it will be the best product possible. There will be a chapter in the beginning to set the stage, a chapter at the end to wrap things up, and 4 other distinct locations including: a mausoleum, which willl feature some very challenging traps, a temple, some caves, and a very special place unique to Arekoz (and somewhere else).
    • We will be publishing a series of adventures written by Jeff College in the future as well. No decisions have yet been made about the exact date of release, or the price.
    • Finally the question we are asking at our Arekoz website is "What is the Arcanexus?" A picture of it is posted on the right hand side of the screen on the top bar of the Arekoz website. The first one to guess the real world thing that this symbol pertains to (and I'll give you a hint - it has nothing to do with the occult) will win a free copy of White Robes, Black Hearts: Enigma of the Arcanexus once it is available.
  • Pinnacle has posted another "Making of Weird Wars" bit. (thanks to NeghVar for the scoop)
  • Scooper "Dweomer" picked up this list of Weird Wars classes and prestige classes from a discussion list:
    • Classes:
      • Grunt: Your basic enlisted man and the best fighting class.
      • Officer: Officers have a number of special feats available as bonus feats that allow them to give modifiers to Init, Will saves versus fear and suppression, etc.
      • Medic/Nurse: The medic can restore hit points as long as he has access to medical supplies.
      • Pilot: They can fly fighters and/or bombers.
      • Resistance Fighter: Resistance members are good at sneaking around and gathering info. They can also call on their Resistance cell for assistance and equipment.
      • Scout: Good at sneaking around and ambushing people. Help speed overland movement. Prime candidates for the sniper prestige class.
    • Prestige classes:
      • Commando: Good at sneaking and hand-to-hand combat.
      • Sniper: Yes, the sniper has a one shot kill capability.
      • OSI Adept: The OSI (Office of Supernatural Investigations) is an Allied group set up to combat supernatural threats. The adept is a spellcaster that uses the ancient Germanic runes discovered by the Nazis to cast their magic.
      • OSI Chaplain: Similar to the Blessed in Deadlands. They use divine magic to heal and aid others.
      • OSI Operative: Think Bond, James Bond.

Autographed FR Book: Want to buy a limited edition of the FR Campaign Setting book signed by Ed Greenwood, Sean Reynolds, Skip Williams and Rob Heinsoo? You can sign up to be notified when the WotC online store has these available for sale. (thanks to Brett and Skaven and of course Pat for the scoop)

Forgotten Realms Delay? Since last night I've been hearing all sorts of rumors of a slight delay with the sales of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book by some stores. And indeed, my very own local gaming shop just this morning informed me that the date has been "pushed back" until Monday, May 29th. Of course, we all know how well-informed most game shop employees are. ;-)

So what's the truth? Here's WotC's tabletop RPG business manager Anthony Valterra with the scoop:

Our original ship schedule (we do not have release dates) would have put the product in the hands of the retailers during the last week of May (5/29-6/1). This is earleir than our original date of June 2nd. Due to a whole host of issues, one of which was a desire on the part of retailers to have the product for the Memorial Day weekend, we pushed very hard to see if it was possible to get the product to all retailers by Friday the 25th. As of this morning I was told it is doable and we are moving forward with that plan. So the upshot is that by the time you read this, we should have informed all distributors that the product is available for them to ship to accounts in time for Friday and we will have started shipping all of our direct accounts so that they can have it on Friday.

So what does this mean? It apparently means that some places very well could have it in stock by Friday. Some might not, however. Here's my advice: phone first before rushing out to your local shop.

Official Website Updates: What's new at WotC?

ESD Program to Resume Under Butler: Posted to WIZINFO-L by WotC's Julia Martin was this encouraging note regarding the ESD program:

Wizards of the Coast has recently signed a deal with Jim Butler to have him continue the ESD program that he started while he was here. You should start see additional ESD materials available in June. A schedule will soon be released that covers the specifics of when you should see the products at the online store, but presented below is a list of products you should see over the coming year. [followed by a list of over 600 items ranging from the 1E PHB, MM and DMG to Planescape, Ravenloft, 1st edition modules, and lots more.] Is this list complete? No, there are still products that are not on the schedule that need to be scanned. We'll have to get to those next year. In addition, there might be changes to this schedule if anything glaring has been missed. If you have questions about the ESD program, please contact Jim Butler. Schedules and other information will be available at the Wizards of the Coast and Bastion Press websites.

For those who don't know, ESDs (Electronic Software Downloads) are a fancy way of saying "Old D&D stuff scanned and in PDF format for sale at store.wizards.com." (thanks to Pat and Mike for the scoop)

D20 System News:
  • Sword & Sorcery to Publish Fiery Dragon's D20 Products: As noted in this press release, Sword & Sorcery Studios will be publishing future D20 System products created by Fiery Dragon Productions. Its initial release under
the Swords & Sorcery banner, Nature's Fury, will be available in mid-August,
followed by Counter Collection I: The Usual Suspects, The Giant's Skull, and Gates of Oblivion. Sword & Sorcery currently publishes its own line of D20 products (Scarred Lands setting materials including Relics & Rituals) and those of Necromancer Games (Crucible of Freya, etc.). Sword & Sorcery are in turn a division of White Wolf, whose ArtHaus imprint will be publishing the Ravenloft D20 setting licensed from WotC this fall.
  • Necromancer Games has a new page for the forthcoming products of Rob Kuntz. There you can download a .pdf of the original tournament module from days gone by, To the City of Brass. It should be noted that "this competition module is not an "introduction" for the City of Brass modules that Mr. Kuntz will be producing for Necromancer. It is provided here solely to give all of you a taste of Rob's 'First Edition Feel.'" (thanks to Daemonic Tutor for the scoop)
  • I reported recently on a D20 Product called Dungeons from AEG that had kind of flown under the radar and is already on shelves without much fanfare. Turns out the company has a couple of other "stealth products" on the horizon (thanks to David Lawson for the scoop):
    • Evil ($19.95): It's good to be bad! This 128-page D20 System sourcebook has everything you need to run and develop evil alligned characters and campaigns, plus rules for new prestige classes, spells, clerical domains, and demon summoning. Release Date: July, 2001.
    • Dragons ($24.95): The king of all fantasy beasts makes his triumphant appearance in this mammoth, 196-page addition to the D20 System core line, incorporating rules for dragon hunters, dragon riders, aerial combat, new dragons, and thoroughly re-defining the ten major dragons that started it all. Release Date: September, 2001.
  • Eden Studios has added two new products to their D20 lineup:
    • Waysides: The Book of Taverns ($25.00, Fall 2001): The Book of Taverns presents over 30 detailed inns and taverns ready to drop into your campaign world. Everything from the smallest hostel, to massive hotels with over 100 rooms! Each tavern comes complete with: Detailed floor plans of every inn; NPC stats for the owners, operators and frequent customers; Menus and prices for all available good and services; Adventure hooks for each inn and tavern; A short discussion of the local culture, be it European, Viking, Arab or something more exotic.
    • Fields of Blood: The Book of War ($25.00, Fall 2001): The Book of War provides everything you need to rule a nation, raise an army, and assault your enemies on the battlefield. With rules governing anything from small keeps to vast nations, your character can now be a hero both in the dungeon and on the battlefield. Fields of Blood: The Book of War is totally scalable to suit your campaign Inside you will find: A complete set of detailed wargame rules based on the d20 system mechanic to resolve combat at any scale. Rules for leading troops. Anything from a small squad of men to an army of thousands! Rules for governing. Everything from the cost of building and maintaining a small keep, to taxing a nation of millions. Rules for NPC nations allowing GMs to run several dozen opposing realms at a time. Leadership rules for every class, using your character's strengths to lead an army. Rules for using miniatures, or tracking the battles on a simple map. New prestige classes for every character type, designed for use with this system.
  • Eagle-eyed scooper Scott Payne spotted an ad for Namsco, an Asian themed D20 System setting. He scanned a flyer with some details and points out that they have a website, which only announces "Coming Summer 2001."
  • The four latest Adventure Keep modules from AEG have arrived in some stores. They include Princes, Theives and Goblins, The Illusionist's Daughter, Temple of the Iron Codex and Dawn of the Serpent. (thanks to Dan for the scoop)
  • Viking Press announced in this press release that they've revised their release schedule.

Gaming Survey at Gygax.com: Gary Gygax is helping a friend by hosting a gaming-related survey for her so she can gather data for some academic research. If you've got a few minutes, why not stop by and see if you can help? Think of all Gary's done for you! :-)

Kezner's Root: Here's Mark Plemmons of Kenzer & Co.:

...the first Kingdoms of Kalamar module, Root of All Evil, is off the presses and is being shipped to distributors this week. Distributors should be receiving their copies early next week. Root of All Evil is a 64 page module, retailing for $12.99. Of the 64-page total, 48 pages contain the adventure details, NPC statistics, encounter tables, etc. The remaining 16 pages, as well as the inside covers, contain DM maps and player handouts, and includes the Kingdoms of Kalamar's own 'ImageQuest Adventure Illustrator.' This section is designed for use by the GameMaster during play. The adventure text prompts the GM as to the precise time that each illustration (scenes from the player's point of view) should be displayed.

Mark was kind enough to pass along three sample images (the first you can see above, here are the second and third).

D20 System News:

  • Scooper Oren Douek spotted a description of the second adventure for Chaosium's Dragonlords of Melnibone, expected to release in July:
    • STRAITS OF CHAOS. A D20 adventure on the high seas for levels 3-6. $8.95, 32 pages. Written by Shawn Havranek. The seas of the Young Kingdoms are fraught with peril. Some waters are more dangerous than others though all captains avoid the Straits of Chaos. Strange sea beasts, wild magics, and Dharijorian pirates plague the narrow strait and the weather can change from calm to storm within a drumbeat; but when Melnibonean warships are closing in even the bravest sailor may see the murderous straits as the lesser evil -- our heroes soon find themselves in terrible peril. Appendix includes new prestige classes, spells, and monsters.
  • Word from Mystic Eye Games is that their first published D20 System adventure, The Pit of Loch-Durnan, has shipped and should be on shelves late this week. Web-enhancements for this adventure will be posted soon. Their monster book, Nightmares & Dreams, has gone to the printers. New free monsters will be posted to the website once a week for the next three weeks (a new one went up today).

D20 System News:

  • Fantasy Flight Games has posted some info-bits and illustrations from their forthcoming Traps & Treachery hardcover.
  • AEG is apparently releasing a new D20 System product called Dungeons this week (one scooper has actually spotted it in a store). This one has flown under the radar, so much so that I can't even find a mention of it on their website. In any case, distributor info says, "Dungeons - $19.95 - this is a 120 page D20 System accessory designed to help you construct dungeons for your campaign." The scooper who spotted it in a store describes it as "a sort of survival guide for DMs and players, giving tips on how to build good dungeons, traps etc. for DMs and how to survive them for players. Also includes some new prestige classes, spells and magic items." (thanks to DMJeff, Greg, and Dan for the scoops)

  • Bonus CD-ROM: We've already had a report on what this CD contains (check out the May 6th news for details). What I didn't know (and shame on all of you who didn't tell me) is that it's RPG Planet's very own Jamis Buck's Random Dungeon Generator that is provided on the CD! Congratulations to Jamis! Very exciting!
  • This Month's Theme--Dragons:

    • "Bazaar of the Bizarre" showcases new dragon-related magic items.
    • "Vs. Dragons" helps PCs with their dragon-fighting tactics.
  • Countdown to the Realms: It's over, and the Realms are here! (Well almost.) Presented are "ten reasons you'll love the book even if you hate the Realms," a new item (blade boots), the town "stat block" for Silverymoon, and a "by the numbers" list of interesting facts about the book (18 PC race variants, 50 new feats, 38 new spells, etc.).
  • New Regular Features:
    • Campaign Corner: Adventure hooks for different campaign settings (particularly currently "retired" settings like Ravenloft and Dark Sun). This month, we're presented with some handouts (notes, drawings, etc.) accompanied by the adventure hooks.
    • Faiths of Faerun: Rather than relying on prestige classes to do the job, Julia Martin and Eric Haddock present "multiclass paths" and suggested feat progressions to give the feel of "specialty priesthoods" to the clerics of Forgotten Realms gods. This month we're shown a progression for the Magistrati of Azuth (they're cleric/wizards with a little more cleric than wizard toward 20th level), and the Watchers of Helm (they're clerics with a couple of levels of fighter gained early on).
    • Elminster's Guide to the Realms: Ed Greenwood presents notes, NPCs, spells, and maps related to "lost places, familiar haunts, and strange sites in the lands of Faerun." This month it's Mrelgaunt's Turret, a crumbling tower held aloft by magic.

May 13, 2001

Poll: Thanks to all of you who helped out this weekend by expressing your opinion on the D20 System forum situation on my message boards. I think we've got a solution that will work. My D20 System forum has been renamed D20 System Games (to focus on stand-alone D20 System games, plus more typical fantasy D20 System products if you'd like), and EN World now has a D20 Publishers forum where you can post your questions and comments about published D20 System products so the publishers can read and respond. (We've already had four publishers stop by in the past few hours!)

The new poll concerns the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, coming out at the end of next week.

Site Updates: I've gone through the D&D Links page and removed a few dead ones. I've also added a D20 Discussion section to my D20 System Guide -- it has links to official and unofficial message boards and other discussion groups related to the D20 System.

May 12, 2001

Poll: As you can see in the Poll Archive, the majority of voters want to be rid of hit points entirely for a D20 System game that uses firearms. The next popular choices were "I don't care either way" and "stick with hit points but modify other rules."

The current poll concerns my message boards. I've had a D20 System forum for some months now. Should it stay or should it go?

GenCon PreReg Book: I got the GenCon 2001 Preregistration Book in the mail today. Here are some things that jumped out at me...

Message Board Roundup:
  • There's a new forum at WotC for Defenders of the Faith.
  • Sean Reynolds on Rangers and Two-Weapon Fighting: I believe the original question was this: Q: Because a ranger gets Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting as free feats, can a ranger with BAB +9 take Improved Two-Weapon Fighting as a feat (even though they haven't spent actual feat slots on TWF and Ambi)? My answer is yes (and the feat description confirms this). Rangers do _not_ get ITWF for free. [Official Boards]
  • James Wyatt on why his Shining Blade of Heironeous prestige class in Dragon Magazine doesn't have access to the Glory domain from Defenders of the Faith: I wrote the Dragon article so the classes would be playable even if you didn't have DotF... thus, no Glory domain. Heck, yeah, give it to 'em in your game. [James Wyatt's Boards]
  • Rich Baker on Realmspace info in the FR Campaign Setting: It's discussed very briefly--you get about one paragraph on Selune, on the Tears, and the other planets as a whole. It's more of a mention than these places received in the previous edition, but it's not a great amount of information. [Official Boards]
  • Scoopers: The Shadow of My Former Self, Roland Delacroix, Ken

New in the Conversion Library: Classes -- bladesinger, ranger variants, ship mage. Updates to other files.

Community News:
  • MonteCook.com has been updated with a new version of the Ranger class along with some other articles. (thanks to Matt Rossi for the scoop)

  • MonteCook.com has posted a review of Demons & Devils (Necromancer).
  • RPGAction.com has posted reviews of four Adventure Boosters (AEG).

Master Tools Beta Up in the Air: Will there be an open beta test for Master Tools, and if so, when? Unknown at this point. WotC's Byrt Martinez says, "...beta is a couple of months away still, and we still need to decide how we're going to handle open beta testing." (thanks to Pat for the scoop)

Kalamar Module Date Change: Mark Plemmons of Kenzer informs me that their first Kingdoms of Kalamar module, The Root of All Evil, will probably not be out by May. A few other products on the schedule are pushed back as well; you can see the new estimates in the Kalamar section of my Settings page.

Master Tools Update: Scott from Fluid Entertainment delivers this week's .plan update. Among the many tantalizing tidbits is the news that the product now has a fourth quarter release date rather than the August release previously announced. Here are some excerpts:

Everyone by now has (hopefully) heard about the mapper and the race, character, treasure and encounter generators, but what are the small little tidbits in these features that make for a cool product? Here's a list of features that have gained a little bit of attention -- just throwing everyone a bone here!

A myrmarch formian has an attack with a bite of +13. Clicking on the "Details" button in the character generator shows me the following breakdown:

Base attack bonus +12
Str bonus +4
Size modifier -1
Secondary attack -5
Multiattack Feat +3

It's a handy feature during combat, or even for someone who doesn't know the rules all that well yet.

In the character generator on the "Purchase" tab, I can overwrite the size of a weapon, as per the chart on page 162 of the Dungeon Master's Guide. For example, if I want to equip my cloud giant rogue with an adequately sized Gargantuan light mace, it will recalculate the damage accurately from 1d6 to 4d6....

In the race generator, you can review the Monster Manual text descriptions of each monster. It's a handy reference, especially if you own a laptop....

In the mapper, I can print out my creations to 1/2 inch scale or 1 inch scale. I particularly like the 1-inch scale printouts. No more drawing my combat-heavy rooms with my messy water-based pen and my vinyl playmat. My playmat is still cool because it's so big, but any room that's up to 35 feet by 50 feet will fit on a single 8.5 x 11 inch page. And if you want to print to legal size paper (or a post card for all we care), you can.

Final street version of Master Tools is slated for the fourth quarter. That's roughly a push back of two months, folks. And no, nothing's wrong with the product as it is. We all decided to add in a few more features to round out the product even further. It's additional development time to add more content, not fix or change anything that's already there.

New Hosted Site -- EN World: I'm extremely pleased to announce that EN World will be moving to RPGPlanet within the next couple of weeks as my latest hosted site!

EN World started out as a place to gather materials generated for the shared world-creation project, Daemonforge, but has grown tremendously since then. It now offers fan-submitted D20 System reviews, hosts the Shadowlands campaign setting from Jagged Edge Games, hosts the Midgard D20 adventures 'zine, and is moving toward complete automation for housing fan-submitted materials. And of course, EN World is leading the way for the "ENnies" D20 System award program later this summer.

While the move is underway, EN World will still be accessible at www.d20reviews.com. And even after the move, that address will bring you to their new location here at RPGPlanet. We'll keep you posted on the move, and try to make it as seamless as possible. You will see some reorganization of the message boards as some existing forums and some new forums will be collected under an EN World category.

"And the ENnie Goes To...": Well, no one yet -- but come August you'll know which D20 System publishers have won the EN World d20 System Award in each of 12 categories. You can read all about it, including the list of categories and the bios of the members of the Nominee Selection Committee, at the EN World site (www.d20reviews.com). And don't forget -- once the committee has narrowed down the field, the community will be asked to vote on products in each category. We'll keep you posted!

Publishers wishing to submit entries to be considered for nomination should look for the application rules and application form. Note that there are categories for Best Fan Website and Best Free Product, so you don't have to be a "publisher" per se to seek nomination.

New at EN World:

  • Automated Submissions: We have launched the first of our automated online submission systems - the spell creation form. This form allows you to enter the details of your spell online so that it can be added to our database for easy sorting and searching - you can view them alphabetically or by class and level. Spells are displayed in standard PHB stat-block format for ease of viewing. All spells are subject to rating by the users of the site, so that you can easily pick out the best materials.
  • Spell Competition: To celebrate the launch of our spell submission system, we are holding a competition. We invite you to use the automated spell form to enter your custom spells. The competition will last until June 15th. The person who creates the 'best' spell in our opinion will win the entire Freeport trilogy of adventures by Green Ronin Publishing. The first of these adventures, Death in Freeport, has been signed by the author, Chris Pramas.
  • Midgard: We are pleased to announce the re-launch of Midgard: Online d20 Adventure Magazine, now hosted by EN World. Midgard is a submission-based provider of free adventures for d20 game systems. Midgard will be offering a prize for best adventure in each category of adventure they have. Submissions for the first category, "Interludes", are due by Friday, June 15th. The normal submission process is required for the contest entires see our submission guidelines. Future contests held every two months from that date will be announced.
  • The ENnies: Watch this space . . .

D20 System News:
  • Updates to my D20 System Guide, including new product offerings from 0one Roleplaying Games, adjusted release dates throughout the page (based on new information on websites, etc.), and a look at May and June releases as well as releases scheduled for April or earlier but still AWOL. (thanks to Christoph the Magus for some scoops)
  • Scooper "Revenant" passed along a link to a funny D20 System spoof: D20 Yahtzee.

E-mail Bouncing: All sorts of e-mail I'm sending out is bouncing back. I'm not sure why, but it's probably something on RPG Planet's end. If I was sending something really important I'll try to send it again later; if not, please accept my thanks for the various scoops you've been sending my way.

Poll: As you can see in the Poll Archive, the most common thoughts about WotC's ESD program are as follows:
  • I know about the ESD offerings but I have not purchased any ESDs.
  • ESDs are generally a good value for the money.
  • I feel in the dark about which ESDs are available or coming soon.
  • There is a product line that hasn't been released as ESDs yet that I am eagerly anticipating.

The new poll asks about hit points. D20 System games like Pinnacle's Weird Wars and Deadlands will apparently use a hit point system with some slight modifications to other rules to accommodate the lethality of more modern firearms. Do you think this is the way to go? Should non-fantasy games use something other than hit points?

Gygax Interview: Computer Games Online has posted an interview with D&D's own Gary Gygax. (thanks to Upper_Krust and Darin for the scoop)

Message Board Roundup:

  • Chris Pramas on the process of making miniatures: I make an art order for a miniature and pass it on to the Art Director, Jon Schindehette. The art order is routed to Sam or Todd, and a concept sketch is done. The AD, the D&D Creative Director (Ted Stark), and myself approve the sketch and then it goes to a sculptor. When the green comes in, the same people run another set of approvals, and this time we loop in a factory rep to check for castability. If there are any problems, Mike McVey makes fixes in house and then the green goes back for approval again. When everyone is satisfied, the finished green goes off the mold maker. [Official Boards]
  • Monte Cook on criticism and product prices: ...as far as criticism goes, it's all good. The feedback we get, even if it's all negative (and it certainly has not been), would still make us do our jobs better. However... when it comes to criticizing how much money products cost, then I begin to wince. When it comes to entertainment dollars, there simply is no better value than an rpg product. When you consider that, say Sunless Citadel is something that you and five or six of your friends can all use to entertain youselves for three or four hours once a week for probably four weeks (at least), for the price of two of you going to a two hour movie once (not to mention other much more expensive hobbies), I find it hard to imagine that anyone saying "WotC prices are too high, they're cheating us out of our money" or whatever isn't really giving it enough thought. [My Boards]
  • Scoopers: The Shadow of My Former Self.

Kalamar Domains List PDF: Malcolm J. MacDonald was kind enough to make a .pdf version of the cleric domains list for Kingdoms of Kalamar. You can download it in the Kalamar section of the Settings page.

May 3, 2001

Message Board Roundup:
  • Gary Gygax provides a very brief timeline for the publishing of original D&D and AD&D: I wrote the first draft of the original D&D game in 1972, mailed it to about a score of wargaming buddies in various parts of the country. Most of them were in college, so soon photocopies of the 50 page manuscript were sent on to others. In the late spring of 1973 I revised the ms., it went up to 150 pages, and that new draft was sent to about 50 persons. The commercial game was printed and first sold in January 1974. I wrote the original AD&D MM back in 1976, and it was published in 1977. Then I did the PHB in 1977, and it was published in 1978. finally, I wrote the DMG in 1978, and it was first published in 1979. [My Boards]
  • Sean Reynolds on the "order of operations" for combining metamagic feats: In terms of combining Heighten Spell, do the heightening first. So you'd heighten a fireball to 5th level (giving it a DC of 15+ your ability score modifier) and then could maximize it, which makes it 8th level. DO NOT do other meta feats and then Heighten Spell, or it gives a false conclusion: the above fireball maximized (6th) and thet heightened to 8th would not have a DC of 18+ ... the heighten is only by two levels. [Official Boards]
  • Sean Reynolds on HD and CR vs. "effective level" for monster PCs: A creature's base HD is not the only indicator of what its effective level should be. Its CR is certainly not a good indicator of that. CR measures "how hard it is for a party to kill one in an encounter," which is often very different than "how much more powerful the character is compared to a human," which is what ECL measures. Give a creature Fast Healing 5 and that might bump the CR by 1, just because it's going to be a little harder to kill. Give a _PC_ Fast Healing 5 and suddenly you have a character that the cleric doesn't need to cure in between adventures, which is worth more than +1 over the lifetime of the campaign. [Official Boards]
  • Sean Reynolds debunks a rumor that the FR book will be late: The book _is_ going to be released on time ... it has been printed (I've held a copy in my hands) and is making its way through the distribution network to the retail stores. [Official Boards]
  • Sean Reynolds on how the Realms setting (doesn't) affect the rules for core classes: The design team was told that we shouldn't make design changes to "fix" things that we thought were "wrong" with the core rules. That's why you'll see for limited paladin and monk multiclassing, rather than a blanket "there is no multiclassing restriction for monks or paladins" rule in the book. [Official Boards]
  • Sean Reynolds gives his best guess as to what's OK to do on a FR fan site: Currently we say something like "don't use more than a couple of our images on your site" As for the logo, WotC is probably a lot stricter about that - if you use it, make sure to include "The Forgotten Realms logo is owned by Wizards of the Coast and is used without permission. Use of the logo on this web site is not a challenge to the ownership of the logo." As for your own characters, items, spells, journals, whatever ... go crazy. Basically, you just need to make sure that it's clear that your site is not official in any way. [Official Boards]
  • Bruce Cordell on bite of the wolf and similar psionic powers as they pertain to multiple attacks: If you gain extra attacks through any means, you may be penalized in using your normal and new attack simultaneously unless the power allows you to use the new form's extraordinary abilities (such as multidexterity, etc.). Of course, you can just use the bite as your main attack and not take any penalties. Or, you can bite and use your claws (or swing your sword) simultaneously, in which case the rules for using an off hand weapon kick in. If you happen to have Ambidexterity and/or Two-weapon Fighting, you are happy. Regardng deep impact and whirlwind attack combo: An attack is one swing of your sword, as far as Deep Impact is concerned. You'd pay the cost for each attack that was part of a whirlwind attack. [My Boards]
  • Scoopers: PA, The Shadow of My Former Self.

  • Black Falcon Aerie has posted new reviews of Diablo II: Diablerie and Monster Compendium: Monsters of Faerun.
  • Protectorate is a Forgotten Realms campaign site.

Message Board Roundup:
  • Monte Cook on prestige classes that offer "+1 level of existing class" spellcasting and how that affects the ability to overcome spell resistance: Stack the levels that say +1 level of existing class with the existing class levels for caster level. (And I'd say psions work the same way.) [MonteCook.com Boards]
  • Monte Cook discusses monsters with class and the lich template. [MonteCook.com Boards]
  • Bruce Cordell on combining Stand Still and Hold the Line feats: Yes, Hold the Line and Stand Still can both be used simultaneously (and, for that matter, so can Combat Reflexes). You can use Stand Still and Hold the Line to stop charge attacks (the opponent stops 10 feet from you), so long as your opponent doesn't outreach you. (If your opponent has a longer reach than you do, the opponent can attack you without entering the area you threaten.) [e-mail quoted on Official Boards]
  • Monte Cook on Planar Ally: I've been thinking for a while now that the HD limits on
    the
planar ally spells are all too high. What the spells seem to overlook is
that planar creature's HD is not a good way to measure power. As a house rule,
    I'd advise something more like:
    • Lesser Planar Ally: Up to 6 HD (that's a barbazu or a hound archon, for example)
    • Planar Ally: Up to 8 HD (that's an avoral, or a vrock, but not a pit fiend or a planetar)
    • Greater Planar Ally: Up to 16 HD (that's all the high-end fiends, but not a solar)

Or, better yet, perhaps CR should be used to judge rather than HD? Something like nothing higher than the CR of the minimum level a caster would need to be to cast the spell. [DND-L Archive]

    The Codex Arcanis in
    the Canceri chapter.
