D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

Yeah. Thinking back on it, I don't think my problem is entirely with the Paladin. It's a combination of factors from early D&D. The European Christian knight that embodies goodness killing savage, tribal subhuman monsters made up of racist tropes about indigenous peoples (human sacrificing...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

And? I never said anything about architecture. I was specifically discussing Greek heroes and how the original stories are so far removed from our modern culture that I don't think it's an issue. Additionally, part of the stories of Greek heroes is that they are flawed characters. They're much...

Dragon Age 4 - now The Veilguard

One of the developers hinted that the game might not look like this.

Huh. Not a fan of the trailer. It’s not what I expected it to look like. Hopefully that’s just the trailer’s art style. And the trailer basically says nothing. The character summaries are too short and vague to be interesting or informative and that’s all the trailer was about.

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

Heracles and other Greek heroes were not real and don’t have any real connection to modern culture. Plus they’re still “divine warriors,” being demigods and all, but Heracles didn’t go around killing heathens in the name of Zeus or anything like that. It’s so far removed from our modern culture...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

I don’t see the relevance. The issue is with the trope, not the fact that they are not literally Christian. Dragon Age’s Templars and 40k’s Space Marines aren’t Christian either, but still are obviously based on the image of a Crusader. True. But the type of Paladin art work I was referring to...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

Well, I did give an example of a Paladin subclass that doesn’t rub me the wrong way, Oath of Heroism. But it is the outlier, coming from the Ancient Greek setting. I’m not sure what would fix the Paladin for me. That’s why I asked for ideas in the OP. Maybe if their scope was broadened a lot...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

Hey everyone. I’m back. I mostly skimmed the thread up to this point and I’m not going to respond to every post. I’m frankly disinterested in most of the alignment tangent. And there’s no point in responding to the people that just came into this thread to mock me or condescendingly tell me I’m...

Dragon Age 4 - now The Veilguard

Dragon Age: Origins had the cleanest, most developed story, IMO, but Dragon Age 2’s gameplay and characters and the focus on Hawke were some of my favorite parts of the series. Overall I didn’t like Inquisition. The character were great, but I didn’t like the changes to combat, the pivot away...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

This thread was a mistake and I’m abandoning it for the foreseeable future. I don’t think it has the capacity for the type of discussion I was aiming for. I would prefer if it were closed. Some day I might return to this topic with more research, better citations, and in a different, more...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

I’ve certainly seen the (+) be used in similar ways and was told the last time I made a thread of a similar topic that I should have made it a (+) thread. Not that it’s had any effect on this thread. More people are telling me that I’m wrong and Paladins are fine than are giving suggestions to...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

But the larger point is that people still think of Paladins as Crusaders. They’re still modeled after them. “Deus Vult” is a meme. While the subclasses have a diversity of oaths/worldviews, the popular original image of Paladins is still the baseline (Xenk and Dame Aylin for example). I think...

If the video is misinformation, I apologize and will retract that part of my post, but I would like to see a source countering the video’s view. He does list his sources, after all.

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

Yep. That is why I stopped making threads like that. More people want to make sure a discussion doesn’t happen than actually want to engage with the premise of the thread. Instant regret.
