Top Secret

Since this is a General RPG forum, I don't think this is off topic...

What ever happened to Top Secret? I used to play back in high school (mid-late 80s). Is it still around? Has it gone d20? Does it only exist in its 80s form?

Spycraft would be the best bet for a d20 version. The old Top Secret is not published anymore but you can still find it every now and then.

I still have the Top Secret S.I. (much improved over the original version) boxed set, presumably somewhere in my basement along with the rest of the RPG stuff I don't actually use anymore. :D There wasn't really a setting to speak of with that game that I was aware of, so I'd say just play it with either d20 Modern or Spycraft if you want a more modern ruleset. I always kinda liked that TS ruleset myself though; I played it in college with some pretty good friends of mine quite a bit (it was old then, of course. As am I :() Naturally, we played a bit fast and loose with the rules, though...

One time and one time only we were able to lure John Terra to these boards, but it's been at least a year ago when it happened. Unfortunately, I remember little of the conversation. Long story short, Top Secret is still TSR property, but being a separate game system, and what with the current popularity of Spycraft, Top Secret is very unlikely to ever re-surface.

But as was said, it's spirit lives on in Spycraft. :)

I had some talks with Merle Rasmussen (creator of TS) about him doing a modern espionage RPG for us but talks fell apart and White Wolf was also trying to get him so I figured I could not beat the big boys calling so I backed out ;) . He is a nice guy and did not understand the d20 mechanics but was willing to team up with a writer for it, since I have heard nothing from him in over 9+ months I would assume he decided to stick with his full time job, it was cool just to talk to him about TS and TSR etc...

I have all the mods and the main book. It was one of my favorite games! I liked the Erol Otus cover for one of the mods..name escapes me know. It was a man and a woman coming out of zodiac boat. That was one of my favorite mods too. Then there was Dr. Yes in Dragon..never got to play that one but the name always struck me as cool..even though it was a blantant rip off of Bond. I always pictured my agent as Bond. Especially since I used the Special agent class in Dragon. I didn't like the second edition stuff that came out in the late eighties early nineties...

As you may also recall, Merle Rasmussen made a very brief appearance also, maybe by way of someone else (Terra maybe?) posting mesages from him. It was during a time when the boards were acting horribly, and I also believe it was at Eric's version of this site. Anyway, the boards went down for an extended peiod at the time, and we never saw him again.
