Quick red box/essentials question

Ahrimon

Bourbon and Dice
Does anyone know if you need the red box to use the essentials line? Or will I just be able to pick up Heroes of the Fallen Lands and jump straight into using the new material?

Is there any new character material that is unique to the red box?

Thanks

Good question. I'm wondering this too. If I just buy Heroes of the Fallen Lands and Rules Compendium will I be set?

You do not need the Redbox. The Redbox is just a starter and is a cheap way to get started. It comes with the following and only cost 20 bucks.

  • 32-page book for players, with rules for character creation and a solo adventure
  • 64-page book for Dungeon Masters, with the rules of the game, advice on how to run the game, and adventure content
  • 2 sheets of die-cut tokens for characters and monsters
  • Cardstock character sheets and power cards
  • Double-sided dungeon map
  • 6 polyhedral dice
It'[s just a cheap way to try out the game. You can totally play by just buying Heroes of the Fallen Lands, Rules Compendium and don't forget the DM's kit.

The Red Box won't be needed to use Essentials stuff.

I'm fairly sure that the Heroes books and the Compendium are all you need from the player side of things, though you'll need to get monsters from somewhere.

I plan on ordering 2 of these suckers just to keep one collectible box.:D

Interesting to see the way the content is presented though. It seems that for the first time since 1E the basic rules of gameplay/ combat will be in the Dungeon Masters book. (As it should be) I wonder if this includes magic items?

I'd bet the map is just a poster map, like previous adventures.

I think I'll pick up one of these, open it up, read through it, and unless it offers me something really useful, and box it back up to give as a gift.

EDIT - scratch that, it's only 18 bucks. I'll just buy 2.

When it says "character creation rules", will it contain everything (levels 1-3?) from Heroes of the Fallen Lands?
I mean, every feature or power from a level seems unlikely, but what about the builds?
We'll get both knight and slayer?
*fingers crossed*

I think that with the basic box covering only levels 1-3 we should get to see the first few levels of at least a couple builds per main class. I don't think it will (or should have to) include everything from a larger scope product.
