Give me some idea for my PC's "Companion to Champions"

Well, I will start to play Revenge of the Giant as a player from the next month.

Now, to prepare for when some players cannot attend a game, our DM decided to use the following method.

# PCs are fated champions. Each PC has 1 or more companion characters (per DMG II), who's fate is tied to the PC. They are called Companions to the Champions (CoC).
# CoC can be of any race, including monster. But never be the same role as the tied PC (If the PC is a defender, non of his companions can be defender).
# During encounters, companions are fighting or otherwise co-working with PCs, but supposedly either fighting enemies out of battle grid and such. So, they never actually attend encounters.
# Outside encounters, PCs can ask some temporal work to his CoCs. But if a PC starts an encounter when his CoCs are out of his sight, the PC suffers -1 penalty to all of his attack rolls, defenses & skill checks. If this continues to the next encounter, this penalty is accumulated.
# When a player is absent to a game, players may let appear a CoC who's character role is the same as the absent player's PC. And that CoC attends the encounter. DM may allow this in other situation, to.
# The CoC is controlled by the player of the PC who's fate is tied to that CoC.
# A PC may have multiple CoCs. But in that case, no two of his CoC have the same character role.

Example: The player of Tordek the fighter (defender) cannot attend that day's game. So, the player of Mialee the wizard (controller) use her companion character Regdar (Defender).

Now, the party will be composed of,

Dwarf Avenger of Moradin 12/Relentless Slayer (Fire Giant) ... Striker (My PC).
Half-Elf Bard/Warlord Hybrid 12/Daring Blade ... Leader
Dwarf Shaman 12/Warrior of Spring ... Controller
Drow Druid 12/Bloodmoon Stalker ... Leader
Kobold or Kalashter Paladin (Multiclass Fey Warlock)/Something ... Defender
Dragonborn Draconic Sorcerer 12/Arcane Wellspring ... Striker

The Half-Elf Bard/Warlord/Daring Blade has AC 30 and can use Ardent Strike as an at-will power thanks to Versatile Master feat. Due to high charisma, his divine sanction is quite strong indeed (12 radiant damage). So he can double as a defender when needed.

My PC is a pure striker. And the party has another striker (Sorcere). We will have 2 leaders, too. We have only one defender. But it is more like having 1 and a half defenders as Bard/Warlord can take that role partially, when needed. We have only one Controller.

So now, my PC's CoC should be a Controller I guess. And if I have another one, it will be a defender.

Do you guys have some recommendations of classes and races, or some idea for fluffs?

My PC is a somewhat simple character. Zealous and ferocious, but still cunning, avenger of Moradin. He has sworn to slay any giants, especially Fire Giants, he meets. He has Mark of Making (this is not a Eberron campaign but the DM allowed to take Dragonmarks) and also act as the party smith.

At this moment, I have no clue what kind of controller companion will be good, both regarding performance and fluff. Invoker or Wizard, both Human, seems to work best, assuming a companion character still has extra at-will power due to human racial trait. But I can't think of any particularly good fluff why such a character is the companion of my PC. As this will be the NPC most closely tied to my PC, I want something .... colorful and interesting.

As for defender, my current No.1 candidate for the defender is Hammerer Automaton (appears in HS2 Orcs of Stonefang Pass) upgraded into L12 defender companion character. It cannot mark opponents. But it can grab an opponent with it's at-will power. I still need DM's approval as we are not sure if at-will grabbing is too much, or to weak. My second candidate for the defender is some Paladin, possibly Goliath, as Dwarf and Goliath tend to become good friends. Still, I hesitate to use Paladin, as we already have one Paladin PC and one who has Paladin at-will power.

dwarven invoker - could be related to your PC
human wizard - your dwarf saved his life earlier when your dwarf killed a giant that was going to kill the wizard -or- the wizard lost a family member to a giant and thus has a vendetta against giants, hearing of your dwarf's victories, he wanted to join up.
human invoker - could just have the religious connection and they met each other at a church/religious event.
Angel invoker - take one of the angels from the MM, make it an invoker by swapping a power or two. it's an angel sent by moradin to help your dwarf on his quests.

though, of the above, I think the dwarven invoker that is potentially related to your PC, like a brother, or the angel invoker might be the better of the stories)

For the defender:
dwarven fighter - piggybacking off the above idea, another brother
dwarven/goliath(or any race really) warden - from the mountains where the giants are
angel fighter - much like the angel invoker idea. take an angel that's a solider from the MM and make it a fighter.

so you could potentially be the dwarven avenger with a pair of angels helping him. or his brothers from the clan helping him, etc.

Thanks. Dwarf brothers seems to be one of natural choices.

I am not sure if my DM will allow me to use highly modified angels. But maybe Deva instead?

Ah, okay, when you said "monsters" I assumed you meant any sort. On second reading, I guess you meant those monster NPC races (goblin, kobold, etc). But, yeah, deva could work just the same!

Actually, the DM is saying that straight-conversion of monsters into companion characters, say, changing an existing soldier monster into a defender companion just by adjusting numbers according to DMG 2 guideline, could be accepted. Though still need his approval.

But say, making an original monster, like an angels given PC class powers, are basically not welcomed. As players design their companion characters by themselves, free-hand may cause much trouble.
