Full Circle: 1983 - 2010

Thought it was fun to compare and contrast when I got home from my FLGS this morning. I dug out my original red box from 1983. I no longer have the crayon that came with the old set but I still have all the dice in my huge bag of dice. I imagine there was some marketing material in the box, too, but I no longer have it.

It's kind of a fluke that I even ended up with one from '83. My cousin actually received it for Christmas that year and spent a few weeks staying with us when his dad visited for the holidays. The sealed box had fallen behind my dresser and I discovered it while cleaning my room on summer vacation in 1984. I was 11 years old. What an impact that discovery had on my life. Luckily by the time I was able to tell my cousin I had it, he didn't want it back.

Ah, the nostalgia!

I remember playing out of the Red Box once...years ago, shortly after my introduction to AD&D in high school. But I've never spent any time with one in my hands, so it's fascinating to me to see how faithfully WotC's reproduced the look and feel of the old Red Box with the new one. Very impressive.

Thanks for sharing!

BTW... I like the... Symbolism? Of finding your original red box behind your dresser...

It's almost like you went into a dungeon and stumbled upon an artifact of immense world changing power. :)

One of my few regrets of my childhood was that I never discovered D&D. None of my friends ever played it so it wasn't until Law School that I actually started playing. :(

That being said, the only thing that's really holding me back from purchasing the Red Box is that I just don't have that nostalgia factor with it.
