You're more than welcome to create your own rituals, I do so regularly, and use rituals as plot hooks extensively. For cost, I'd take a look at the existing rituals and pick a cost that matches the level. Most rituals within a level will have a similar cost, with a variance for some being more expensive and some being cheaper. Just ask yourself how often you want the PCs to be using it, and assign a low, medium or high cost as appropriate.

I don't know about any guidelines, unfortunately. Are you the DM or a player?

To be honest, as a DM I wouldn't want my players to invent new rituals. Now, creating rituals as a DM to be available in my game - that's something I'd consider.

Why not? If they got the idea and keep the balance up, let them support you in creating rituals. Especially if the PCs are doing a quest to get a certain ritual or the mage is researching a ritual by himself. I think this can be cool (remember V in OOTS! )

There's the clincher.
You'd have to trust the players that they are actually interested and knowledgeable enough to keep it balanced. I don't know your players, but my group includes some players that would just love to get something past me that isn't balanced. :)

Any time one of those players asks me if I'd consider allowing 'x' although it's not RAW but would be 'totally reasonable and also more realistic', my warning bells go off.

So, it's the same reason why I never allowed them to create new magic items in 3e. Only creating items found in official sources were allowed.

Some of them visit the CO boards from time to time and get 'funny' ideas... and I definitely do not approve of 'funny' ideas. Roleplaying is serious business after all ;)

hehe, okay. My players are mostly ot of this kind. But terms like "totally reasonable" and "more realistic" should ring the warning bells of any GM :)

I would be soooo pleased if one of my players took their free time to make up some rituals they wanted to see in the world. Any kind of thing like that shows investment in the game and allows the players to create small bits of the world. I love it.

The main thing is to just compare the effects of the ritual they (or you) create and compare it against rituals in the game already. My best suggestion would be, come up with the effect you want to have happen, then go to established rituals and compare the effect. Once you find a ritual that's similar in power, set the level and cost based on that ritual.

If it's a totally radical effect, use your best judgment as a DM and make sure you explain to the player that it may need to be changed if it becomes a problem.

im having a hard time chosing an epic destiny, i can decide if a wanna go with archmage or if wanna go with magister. i'd like to hear some opinions if anyones in a sharing mood! -Lord Phoenix
