Dire Slug - Level 6 Controller

In that tradition of Dungeons and Dragons, here is a truly cheesy monster to slow your players down.

Dire Slug
Level 6 Controller - Large
Speed:5
Initiative: +4

Str: 14
Con: 16
Dex: 19
Int: 12
Wis: 14
Cha: 8

HP: 72 (Bloodied at 36)
AC: 20
Fort: 18 Ref: 19 Wil: 17

Powers
Slam
Basic - AtWill
+11 vs. AC
Hit: 1d6+4; Target is slowed until the end of the Dire Slug's next turn.

Goo Net Spit
Encounter - Recharge 5,6
+10 vs. Ref - Area Burst 2 within 10
Hit: 1d6+4; Targets are immobilized until the end of the Dire Slug's next turn.

Puddle of Filth
Free Action - AtWill
An area of 3 around the Dire Slug becomes difficult terrain.

Enjoy, and please let me know what you think.

I'd swap the con and dex scores. And then knock dex down to 10 or so. A giant slug have a high reflex defense is a tad counter intuitive.

Even today it just doesn't seem right to me that a campaign is supposed to be a "Search for the next big bad evil guy." To me , I just expect it to be "a bunch of stuff that happens as the PC's try to get rich, and piss people off as it happens."

But they're slippery!

Haha I know what you mean. I did a high Dex because the Monster Manual recommends a higher stat for the monster's primary attack, but it doesn't look like it actually makes a difference in that regard, and the high reflex for the slug is, like you say, counter intuitive.

I think the giant slug should also have the ability to squeeze through small spaces.

What would fight with a dire slug?

Snrk.

I meant, what would fight along-side. As in, if you were building an encounter, and were pairing several monsters together including the dire slug, what else would be in the encounter fighting with it?

I think they could make interesting mounts for... something. What, I don't know.

I think faerie would be best. Have a couple of slugs with spearmen riders and some archers firing upon people that are slowed/immoblized. Sounds like it would be an interesting fight.

12 Int? Genius slug, perhaps? I'd make that a 2 in my own game. And that Dex shouldn't be too high, either (slugs aren't too agile, IIRC).

Good, good. Control and a little bit of damage. But the goo net spit should simply be "recharge 5,6"--it's a recharge power, not an encounter power.

I'd make this an aura, and the slug exempt, myself. Your version has the advantage of persisting, but it does affect the slug too.

I'm thinking of yoinking this for an encounter for my own group (although I'll probably reskin it as some kind of aberrant beastie, because of my own storyline).

Hey guys. Sorry for taking so long to get back.

I lowered the Dex quite a bit and tested this guy with my group. Unfortunately, he did not get the chance to show off at all, as they caught him in a surprise round and completely obliterated him before his turn ever came. This is partially my fault, as I had his allies (2 Boneshard Skeletons and 2 Corruption Corpses) posing as regular ol' dead bodies, so they just blasted the large creature in the room.

If you try out the Dire Slug, changed or otherwise, please let me know how it goes, I'd be very interested.

I made one of these a mount for a sahaugin baron and his priest, following a group of minion guards up a town street. The slug got off a couple goo shots, the first of which was particularly effective. The aura and the slam also made life hard on the party warlock.

The baron leapt down and waded into melee, while the priest stayed where he was and rained down powers on the group. The baron was brutal (the ongoing 5 damage from a simple claw attack was particularly nasty), and this very nearly ended in a TPK.

I copied this image from Google, printed it out, and taped it to the front of 3 Jenga blocks stacked one-on-two to represent the body, making a 3x2 creature.

All in all, this was a strong, challenging encounter. I used the following stats for the slug (some of the numbers may be a little off - I just winged them):

Dire Slug
Level 6 Controller - Large
Initiative: 14

Aura: Puddle of Filth
An area of 3 around the Dire Slug
becomes difficult terrain.

HP: 72 (Bloodied at 36)
AC: 20 Fort: 20 Ref: 14 Will: 17
Speed: 4

Slam (Basic – At Will)
+11 vs. AC; Hit: 1d6+4; Target is slowed until the end of the Dire Slug's next turn.

Goo Net Spit (Encounter - Recharge 5,6)
+10 vs. Ref - Area Burst 2 within 10
Hit: 1d6+4; Targets are immobilized until
the end of the Dire Slug's next turn.

Str: 14 Con: 19 Dex: 10 Int: 2 Wis: 14 Cha: 8

Hey, Wampus. It does my heart joy to hear that an altered version of my creation was part of a near-TPK encounter (not that I'm out to get my players or anything). I'm glad it was useful and fit into your party.

Thanks for linking the image. I wish I had thought of searching for such an image before I used the encounter. It would have had quite an effect on the group. They get so squeemish just thinking about the necrotic glob that Corruption Corpses throw around.
