Feats that give Weapon Proficiencies are a little wonky to me. The biggest example of this is in the game I am currently running, where our Artificer just came right out and took Weapon Proficiency: Greatbow. I personally can't see any reason not to do this as an Artificer, and I don't think its really in the spirit of the system. Another problem is the grey area with Eladrin Soldier and Dwarven Weapon Training, and whether the former gives you proficiency in the Tratnyr, Greatspear, and Urgosh and the latter gives you proficiency in Waraxe, Execution Axe, Double Axe, Urgosh, Craghammer, and Mordenkrad.
I've come up with a simple houserule for this, and it works both ways:
1. The Weapon Proficiency feat gives you proficiency in all simple and military weapons from a specific weapon group. Similiarly, the Eladrin and Dwarf feats are limited to simple and military weapons in terms of proficiencies granted(though the +2 damage applies to everything).
2. Superior Weapon Proficiency is its own feat, and it has "proficiency in all simple and martial weapons in (one of) the Superior Weapon's group(s) as a prerequisiste. It grants proficiency in a single Superior weapon.
3. On a side note, I'd switch Rapier and Kukri to milititary weapons, and the Rogue still doesn't start with proficiency. It makes the rogue spend one feat to get these(Weapon Proficiency: Light Blades), and then another to get the Double Sword. I don't find the Rapier and Kukri out of line as Military weapons for non-Rogues.
This makes the Artificer have to spend two feats to get the Greatbow, while an Elf or Ranger only has to spend one. Fighters, Rangers, Paladins, Warlords and such still have an easy time taking superior weapon proficiencies, as they should. It also clears up the grey area with regards to the racial proficiency feats, and my side note makes the Rapier a valid choice compared to the Double Sword for Rogues.
