Death, Dying and Long term injuries

I have been considering a houserule for an upcomming campaign and am just looking for some feedback.

I am considering adding the APG lingering wounds rule to the campaign (works on the disease track) with the following adjustments.

I am currently undecided between the slightly deadly and somewhat deadly variants, leaning towards the somewhat deadly.

The big change comes in the death saving throws. When you fail your third in an encounter you don't die, but rather you are knocked unconscious, unable to continue in the encounter and worsen one step on the condition track.

While this reduces the chances of dying in any single encounter (as you can now only die by dropping to negative bloodied or falling off the lingering injury track) this will be countered by the penalties for having a lingering wound.

Any thoughts and comments are welcome.

I'm not familiar with the system, what are the end results? Attribute damage and cumulative permanent roll penalties?

There is a cumulative penalty to certain rolls as well as a reduction of available healing surges. As it is designed for 4e, there is no attribute damage.
