Alternative RAW Poll

How Do You Adjudicate the Rules?

Ok, I am putting up an alternative RAW Poll to see if the numbers change.

The categories are:

1) RAW - Rules as written, no changes, even for missing or incomplete rules.

2) RAW + House - Rules as written the majority of time plus some House Rules to address some issues with the RAW Rules.

3) Interpretive - An interpretive style to reading the rules where the DM and players come to a consensus as to what works for their game. Still RAW, but not a literal RAW, rather an interpretive RAW (i.e. If it can be interpreted 2 ways, we pick our way).

4) Interpretive + House - As interpretive, but some House Rules added to address issues with RAW.

5) House Rules RULE - A significant number of house rules (say 20+ pages). Whether the rest is RAW or Interpretive is irrelevant since we House Rule anything we disagree with.

6) Other - Whatever floats your boat that is significantly different from the other 5 choices. Please explain.

In addition to my vote (RAW + House): Given the game world I created, I removed alignment. Otherwise, it's RAW + House. Did I vote correctly? :)

Far, far better wording on this poll. I predict that option 1 will get next to no votes, which I gather was the "point to prove" in the previous poll, but that option 2 will get quite a few votes...

Actually, I really had no point to prove with my poll. I posted it more to see if people's playstyle represented (from a percentage standpoint) what I figured they did...and largely I think it has.

The options of this poll are fine and from the descriptions I can confidently choose which option best fits my game. So if this wording works better for some, then great.

For what it's worth, I consider the RAW + House and Interpretive + House options in this poll to be a breakout of my Casual + House option (basically, those two added = Casual + House in my poll).

And I can see the value in breaking those out.

EDIT: I chose Interpretive + House, btw.

Interpretive + House Rules

I always go by the spirit of the rules rather than the letter. I always try to discern, what a rule is meant to do, instead of blindly following what it says it does, in case it doesn't do what it is meant to.

For example, I don't allow a single-class druid to gain an advantage from the Natural Bond feat with advanced animal companions, even though I am aware, that the letter of the rule probably (not necessarily, though, considering some ambiguity in there with the terms 'effective druid level' and 'druid's effective level') says, that they can.

I guess that's about what you mean by the difference RAW - Interpretive?

I think there is little doubt that EVERYONE who tries to stick with the rules uses them in an "interpretive" way, even if they don't realize it. You may THINK there is some magical thing called RAW, but it's all about how YOU interpret the words and decide what they mean.

We avoid house rules, generally, but we do have a couple even though I did not vote that way (probably shoud have).

A little off-topic, but my favorite house rule is NO level drains. Only negative levels. Level drains are SUCH a pain in the, well,... never kind that, it's just a pain to re-figure out the character, etc. Too hard.

Plain old interpretive for me. Don't really have many house rules, and any points of contention are agreed with players beforehand.
