Corrupt Spell Metamagic Feat

The Corrupt Spell Metamagic Feat from the Book of Vile Darkness specifies it applies only to a single spell, and that you should take the feat again for every single spell you want to 'corrupt'.

The Corrupt Spell Metamagic Feat from the Complete Divine employs almost identical tekst, but does not list the addition that you can take the feat multiple times, applying it to a seperate spell every time.

What it does is add the Evil descriptor to the spell in question and allow you to apply half the damage dealt (if any) as unholy damage (not subject to energy resistance or immunity)

The spell level increase is +1.

Since it's the only metamagic feat (I'm aware of) that applies only to a single spell (instead of allowing you to apply it to any spell you know, or at the very least a single school or descriptor) I'm wondering wether this is correct.

I'dd just go with the Complete Divine one. It's probably just the updated version of the one in Vile Darkness. Seems rather weak if you had to take the feat again for each spell. +1 lvl is a good setback for it's benefits.

Answer 1: The newer version takes precedence.

Answer 2: It sucks. Don't take it. This avoid the issue neatly.

The point is, both versions refer to 'a spell' instead of 'spells'. The wording is ambiguous as to whether you have to select the spell in question at the time you select the feat or when you cast or prepare the spel.
(I'd post the two versions here but since they are closed content I'm a bit hesitant)

That ambiguity is removed with the BoVD addition of having to take the feat multiple times.

@Dandu: I agree the Feat sucks. I'm just trying to find out how much since it is a prerequisite for a prestige class I'm considering.

I don't believe the 3.5 version restricts you to one spell; other metamagic feats use similar wording, and they can be used on multiple different spells.

What's the prestige class, by the way? There may be a better alternative out there.

I'm just not sure. I guess I'm looking for some official confirmation that just isn't there.... Maybe I should just ask my DM :)

The prestige class is Diabolist, also from BoVD.

What I'm actually looking for is.... mmm. I'll start a new thread for that....

I see what you mean. In CD it also states: one of your spells. But it does this in the short description not in the actual benefits bit. I do agree that in the benefit bit it's still pretty poorly written but that's most likely because they ctrl-c'ed the BoVD one and changed the wording slightly instead of just writing it up again. But it doesn't mention it specificaly in the benefit section and since it would be a exception to how metamagic feats normally work, I can't imagine they wouldn't mention it specifically like they did in BoVD.

If you compare it to consecrate spell it does exactly the same (but good instead of evil) but it doesn't have the poor wording. You'd have to have a pretty nasty DM if he says it's just for one spell.

But yeah, discuss it with your DM if you aren't sure.
