Experience Points

What are Experience Points?

Experience Points are an optional way of showing your appreciation to other users depending on the quality of their posts. They are simply a quick way of saying "Hey, cool!", or "Thanks!" You can opt out of the XP system (see below).

How do I earn Experience Points?

You get XP when other members award them to you, or through certain actions on the site. For example, posting a new thread earns you 1 XP.

How do I give Experience Points?

To give Experience Points, click on the Experience Points icon in the relevant post. You may not give Experience Points for the same post twice.

How do I view my XP awards?

On your profile there is a tab called "XP Awards & Laughs". It shows your recent XP awards.

How many Experience Points are given?

Most people give 1 XP when they "rep" a post. EN World subscribers give more. Copper EN World subscribers give 3 XP, and Silver EN World subscribers give 5 XP. New members may not be able to give XP until they have reached a certain (fairly low) posting threshold - this is just to prevent spam of XP.

I'm a subscriber. Why does it say my rep power is only 1?

We use a "hack" to the messageboard software to multiply the XP you give by 3 (or 5 if you're a Silver Subscriber). The "power" still reports 1 point, but if you check the actual effect of your XP gifts on others, you'll see that they increase by 3 (or 5) when you give XP. Yes, we realise that's not very intuitive - it's what happens when you hack the core messageboard software to do things it wasn't originally designed to do!

What if I don't want anyone to see my Experience Points?

You can disable the display of your Experience Points by going to your User CP and selecting Edit Options. On this page you will find a check box labelled 'Show Your Experience Points Level'. Un-checking this box will remove the display of your Experience Points and replace it with the Experience Points Disabled icon. You can still give and receive Experience Points while your Experience Points display is disabled.

What are the "levels" and how are they related to Experience Points?

As your experience point total increases, so will your level. You gain levels at certain XP thresholds, and each level has a level title. We don't tell anyone in advance what these level names are, so you'll have to discover them the hard way! However, we'll tell you the first few:

  • 0 XP = Novice
  • 10 XP = Acoloyte
  • 24 XP = Gallant

Privacy Tools

Can I block posts and messages from specific users?

Privacy is a serious issue online. If there are particular members that bother you and you do not want to see their posts or receive Private Messages from them, then you can add these members to your 'Block List'. There are several ways to do this:

  1. Through your Settings: Edit Blocked List. Then, type their name into the empty text box and click 'Okay'.
  2. Next to every post on the forums is a "Block User" button which will block the user with a single click.
  3. On ever user profile, there is a link to enable you to add that user to your Blocked List.
When you block somebody, it is mutual. You will no longer be able to see their posts, and they will no longer be able to see yours.

To remove somebody from your Blocked List, simply use the Edit Blocked List link (above).

Profile Privacy

You also have complete control over your user profile privacy. By default, your profile is visible to everyone (including non-registered guests). If you would like to restrict the display of some or all of the blocks on your profile page, you can set these permissions on your Profile Privacy Settings. You can choose between the following lists:
  1. Everyone. Anybody who wishes to will be able to view your profile.
  2. Registered Members. Only members of EN World will be able to view your profile.
  3. Your Friends. Only members of EN World with whom you are Friends will be able to view your profile.
  4. Your Contacts. Only members of EN World who are your Contacts will be able to view your profile.
Contacts & Friends

For more information on Contacts and Friends, click here. A Contact is a one-way relationship, while a Friend is a mutual, two-way relationship.

Friends-Only (Private) Threads

Another tool at your disposal is the ability to create threads which can only be seen by your friends. To do this, simply check the checkbox below the main post content area when starting a new thread. Only those with whom you have a mutual friendship on the forum will be able to see the thread. Threads which are friends-only are highlighted as such.

What if I see something offensive?

You will find 'Report' links in many places throughout the board. These links allow you to alert the board staff to anything which you find to be harrassing, offensive, objectionable or illegal.

Search FAQ

Select this option if you would like your search to look in the text of FAQ items as well as their titles.

Select an option here to specify how you would like your search query to be treated. 'Any words' will return the most numerous but possibly least relevant results, while 'Complete phrase' will return only results that contain exactly what you are searching for.
