What 7th-level Monsters Need Converting?

the Jester

Legend
Ok, continuing my monster project, what cool monsters from old sources that aren't in 4e would make good 7th-level monsters?

Off the top of my head, I've got:

Aranea
Beetle, Slicer
Marrashi
Meenlock
Stone Guardian
Thoquaa
Tick, Giant
Tiger
Yellow Musk Creeper
Yellow Musk Zombies

Sure, I'll give you some.

Mustard Jelly
Swarm, Warden Jack
Giant Eel and Cave Moray
Golem, Ice
Grim Stalker
Hangman's Tree
Cobra Flower (if you haven't noticed, I think we need more plants)
Bloody Bones (Since grappling isn't all that much in 4e, I propose the BB to create a zone of difficult terrain, or maybe something that knocks people prone. Perhaps pushes in the zone have an extra square of distance?)

Consider some templates too, The_Jester. This is something under-done with fan creations. Modifiers for NPCs or good monsters.

Level 7 for meenlock? I thought these guys would be more low-level. Ah yes, should be careful with old-school monsters with insta-kill abilities/poison/drains/permanent transformations etc. I was also thinking loxo for level 4, but it looks like it's up on level 8. Some of my nominations will probably get some massive level bumps. I'm kind of rough guessing here based on the 2e entry's HD and the rough CRs I had pencilled in for 3e use.

MCA 1:
Marrashi

MCA 3:
Scalamagdrion (um yeah, I'm betting Jester's gonna give this guy a level with double digits).

And speaking of templates; there's a number of 2e monsters that I decided would be best used in 3e as templates. I didn't bother with picking them out since I had no idea what 4e might have changed there. If you'd like I could pick some of the cool ones out.

Oooh, both go on the list (though you're right about the scalamagdrion going to paragon level...)

Thanks for all your input, it's nice to know a few folks are interested in seeing some old faves get converted over! :)

Scalamagdrion... that's the thing with the permanent Radius of Silence, right?

I don't know how you would handle 'Your abilities are now haxored' in 4e. The monster design pretty much is the anti-thesis of negating powers.

Yeah, but I can take something like a silence aura and run with the concept while totally changing the mechanical effects.

I could even make it a lurker, and have it use silence to sneak up on people. :snort!:

But you're right, a lot of the old monsters that had "HAH! Now your spells don't work!" abilities need to be rethought in order to convert them. There are a lot that I'm not too interested in. On the other hand, there are a few that I think would make cool conversions- but we'll see.

It's this big dragon-like thing which I believe has a permanent spell turning effect. Great for shredding wizards (damn I almost said mages there...I got to get out of the old-school frame of mind.) :)
