Burst/Blast Templates...

Scribble

First Post
So Someone in my group recently bought some burst/blast templates...

They're basically hollow squares made out of some sort of rigid plasticy material.

When I first saw them I kind of smirked and though ummm how hard is it to see a square on the battlemat?

But then that night involved a fight with a goblin Hexer... he has that power to create a burst 3 that lasts as long as he spends a minor action to keep it going... The blast 3 template was a great help to remind everyone the zone was in effect.

I also noticed that people would grab the template and more quickly determine exatly where they wanted to send en effect.

So all in all they were pretty cool/useful.

I have no idea who makes them, or how much he paid for them, but if you come across them, I'd reccomend not just dismissing them as pointless!

For squares, I think a cheap metal rod (coat hanger) and a pair of pliers would be easy enough to do. Most hardware stores would carry such things. Although, those prices for the plastic ones seem reasonable enough to me.

Like many things in life it's a question of how much is your time worth..

If the choice is between buying these or making your own... Is 15 dollars worth the time it would take you to bend 5 coat hangers into appropriately sized metal squares.

This is a question only you can answer- And perhaps the owl from the Secret of Nihm.

He's smart.

Not just time, but effort.

I know that I feel rather proud of the little things I've picked up or made for my game, or notions I've salvaged (sticky notes for difficult terrain or condition effects), versus straight products I've purchased. One of my players made a giant 4 foot by 3 foot board cut into square inches, and that is a prize right there.

(Although I am rather giddy about my aquarium stone minion minis, or the jenga blocks and giant dominos for encounter dressing).
