Just me, or are 4th ed Deluxe books...tacky? :/

I'd love to buy the 4th ed PHB Deluxe version, IF it was bound in leather.
I don't want to pay £37 for flipping tacky looking metallic cover :(
I'd also hope for premium paper!

Or am I too fussy in my old age? ;)

Well I'm of the opinion that "deluxe" versions of books are tacky in general. The 4e Deluxe books seem no different in that respect (though the metallic cover seems even more over the top than usual).

I'm getting the deluxe DDI with the leather home page and gilt-edged borders. It'll cost three times as much per month but when people see me using it at the library, they'll know I am a serious gamer.

My main problem with those gilt-edged pages is that they're friggin' razors. Some of the worst paper cuts I've had in my life have come from pages like that.

My wife offered to buy me the deluxe monster manual. But after I thumbed through it the only think I could think is," for what?" I got two other books off amazon for the same price.

Not fussy at all. The 4e special edition books looked like very meh to me as well.

A special edition that would have appealed too me would be:
Faux leather cover
Non-glossy yellowed paper
Only Black, Sepia or bloodlike ink.
Art redone to look like medieval woodcuts.

I would have bought that too.

Regardless of whether I needed it, and even if I never switched to 4E, I'd have bought that book.

Yeah, I'd buy that.

There was a 3.x book that used woodcuts or faux woodcuts. I'm struggling to remember what it was but it looked quite cool. I think it might've been the NPC book from HellHound.
