Ki is dead! Can we make martial more magical now?

FireLance

As stated in the Design and Development article on the monk:
the ki power source proved untenable ... As we worked on concepts for the monk, we found that the ki power source grew thinner and thinner. The monk's central, mechanical conceit, full disciplines (more on those later), didn't lend itself well as the umbrella mechanic for a power source. It functions better for a class that likes to move around in interesting ways, but that doesn't necessarily point to an entire source. Instead, it points to the striker role. That's not a good leg for an entire power source to stand on.
Since the ki power source is dead, in my games, the martial power source will officially take its non-flashy stuff. The flashy stuff can go to the psionic power source along with the monk. When a fighter uses come and get it, he's actually using a silk scarf, a rope, a chain, a whip, or some other long, flexible object to pull his opponents to him. :p

Martial all ready is magical! HOw else do you explain martial characters using their abilities once per encounter, or once per day? That's MAGIC!

:p

(Yes, in case you missed the smiley, that's meant as a joke.)

In all seriousness, I like the suggestion.

Of course, I always saw "Come and Get It" to be where the fighter cracks his knuckles, pops his neck, and does the 'bring it' hand motion, calling the target(s) out to face him.

Hmm Ki power source is axed. Martial Power 2 is planned. Maybe PHB3 has a new martial class?
This is actually quite an interesting line of speculation. Adding ki-themed abilities to the martial power source could open up the possibility of a martial controller.

Or a non-magical guy who uses his fists in melee.

I'd really enjoy seeing a Defender of the Hercules stripe.

Or, as Cadfan has been wanting, a non-magical, no-armored guy with a katana.

Actually, I wonder if you could model both of these with the fighter class, but with alternate class features that replace Fighter Weapon Talent. Perhaps a Brawler Technique that grants access to an unarmed attack like the monk unarmed strike, allows an unarmed strike to count as a mace, grants a free Improved Grab feat (PH2), and an AC bonus when fighting without armor and with both hands free (perhaps 4 + Strength bonus), or a Martial Artist that grants bonuses to Acrobatics checks, Athletics checks and Initiative checks, a free (errata'ed) Marked Scourge feat (Martial Power), a +3 bonus to AC when fighting unarmored, and a mobile defence ability that grants him a +2 bonus to AC and Reflex defence until the start of his next turn if he moves at least one square away from where he started his turn.

Hmm. I can sort-of see...

- lightly armored non-magical defender (swashbuckler?)
- non-magical unarmed guy (either as a defender or a striker or both)
- mounted warrior types (problem - without a pokemount, can't deal with dungeons well; with one, isn't really martial)
