PH3 Preview: SKill Powers

I was hoping for something a little free-form, where you perhaps burn encounters or dailies for a skill power.

It does allow for some different mechanics to come in through utility powers though. I notice that counter spelling has (sort of) come back by using the result of an arcana roll to reduce the damage.

Otherwise, it just seems a way to introduce non-class specific powers. I wonder which class specific powers should be kicked into being skill powers?

Well it looks like the Barbarian Tiger's Leap is reprinted as Mighty Leap in there. So that's one class power that is now a skill power.

But my favorite power is "Snap out of it" Punching people to end dominate effects? Hell's yes.

Utility swaps, not bad.

IMHO they're a bit on the low side of the power spectrum, but that's not a terrible thing.

Why is it that these threads always have a post near that top that starts, "I was hoping for..." or "I thought it was gonna be..."..? :D Seems like all that's needed to kick people's imagination off is a good title!

Very cool.

This is exactly what my players and I have been looking for.

I'm strongly leaning towards a houserule that lets you use these without a power-swap, so that at every level you gain a utility power from your class, you also gain one skill-power from one of your trained skills.

I'm not sure what the "Healer's Gift" utility power is for. I've never had a problem of someone trained in heal blowing a skill check to trigger a healing surge more than once.

Faith Healing doesn't seem like it would be that useful either.

I thought the article and concept was interesting, though I don't know that I would swap out a utility for most of these. I know they want to emphasize the powers you get from a class, but why use the power system to do this then?

That aside, there are a few of them that are neat, mostly from the active skills. Most of them I feel are slightly underpowered. I would have liked to have seen more at-will utility powers; for example, the moving through crowds power for Streetwise could have a slightly higher level, but at-will. In fact, that's how I would have worked the higher-level skill powers - more stuff you can do at will.

[EDIT] Also, I think this article was supposed to come out next Tuesday. Nice treat, even if it was a mistake!
