Wizards of the Coast today announced that their contract with Drizzt Do’Urden, their most popular leading character in their best selling Forgotten Realms novels, is due to expire effective August 5, 2010. Future publication of Forgotten Realms novels including Drizzt Do’Urden will cease unless the famed Drow renews his contract.
"Working with Drizzt these past twenty two years has been a real opportunity.” replied author R. A. Salvatore when asked about the possibility of his most popular character becoming a free agent. "While I'll miss working on the various ideas we’ve discussed as well as working with the talented editorial and art staff at Wizards I’m sure that Drizzt will make the proper decision that keep him in touch with his fans."
Industry speculation seems focused on the possibility that Drizzt might sign on with White Wolf, a leading company in horror role-playing and fiction based in their World of Darkness setting. No official word from White Wolf could be obtained however to confirm this rumor. Other sources suggest that possibly a deal with Paizo might be in the works. When asked if interested in signing Drizzt up for their new Pathfinder Tales novel line, head publisher Erik Mona, had this to say. “I think Drizzt would be a perfect fit for Golarion. I could see him easily fitting in as Hell Knight or a member of one of our other more renowned factions. Course that decision would be up to him, but we’d definitely be interested in at least talking with him.”
Time will only tell whether Drizzt Do’Urden will remain with Wizards of the Coast or move on. With Gencon, the best four days of gaming, fast approaching on August 5th some expect an announcement will be made finally revealing where the Drow will go.
Drizzt Do’Urden first appeared in The Crystal Shard published in 1988 and quickly gained popularity among fans of the Forgotten Realms novels as well as fantasy in general.
