God, I *LOVE* BECMI!

First Post
Had the first session of our mini-campaign BECMI game today. We created characters, and then in a session less than three hours, I got to:

* Kill a PC in the very first encounter of the adventure with some lucky die-rolling (and didnt' kill another one all session!) - And I did it with BABOONS!
* Watch a fight with two troglodytes go well for the PCs when one trog failed a morale save - and then gave them a clue to the location of a secret door
* Watched them miss another secret door, but come within THIS close of finding it
* Got to see PCs find hidden treasure
* Have a wandering monster encounter, and see the party mage go crazy with his "sleep" spell in response.
* Hit the party thief with a pit trap that nearly killed her.
* Have the party figure out a magic pool riddle set up, and give them enough clues that they feel confident in solving the whole thing (henh henh henh).
* Watch the party thief actually find a hidden trap that would have potentially killed at least one party member, if not more.

That was less than three hours play. Next week's going to be even quicker, I think, now that we're getting into a groove.

In the end, the PCs each got approximately 60 or so XP, and maybe 13 gold pieces each, as well as some basic gear. And yet, they were pretty excited about their finds. They're convinced they're "this close" to finding a really big score, and are looking forward to next week's explorations. And so am I. So am I.... :)

It really was a trip down memory lane. Watching my brother roll up an elf, and get super excited by the character, was priceless. Especially because he was convinced the elf was awesome, and I was equally convinced he wouldn't make it to 2nd level (I had all PCs start with 2,500 XP, so only the elf was level 1). Watching the elf get hit for just enough damage to kill him was definitely funny.

Too bad it's a mini-campaign, eh? :) Fun like that can last forever!

Your own adventure, or something pre-published?

Send me a ticket, I'm coming to stay with you so I can play next session. :D
Cool stuff Wik, major epic coolness. I might have to dust off my Moldavy boxed set now.

My own adventure, put together this afternoon over the course of around 3 hours. Done with pen and paper, with 40 keyed encounters. I mean, many are just "Empty room, skeleton in corner, 3 sp hidden behind brick" or something like that, but still.

Thing I kind of like, is this mini campaign is set around two or three hundred years before my normal campaign, in the place the PCs are ABOUT to visit, so I can kind of relate what the PCs do now (in the "past") to what my 4e PCs will encounter (in the "present").

Ha ha, thanks. We were playing a sort of mix of Mentzer and Moldvay - whichever book a person grabbed, that was the set of rules he was following. ;) And we threw in a few house rules here and there - clerics could use spears because it fit pre-established stuff in the campaign, ability checks were on 3d6, and whatnot.

I've gotta say - while I probably wouldn't abandon my 4e game for BECMI, there's a lot to say for the edition. There's really nothing that scary about high PC lethality and a skill-less system - it really seems to up player engagement, which I kind of like.

And really, what more do you need; other than a map? ;)

The threat of PC death tends to make players pay attention. :)

And most skill-like situations can either be talked through or winged. We've kind of developed by precedent some very rudimentary systems for a few things that come up over and over again e.g. strength checks that aren't hard enough to require a bars-gates roll, but that's it.

I hear this from more and more of my customers. They try a one-shot of an older edition game (OD&D, MECMI, AD&D 1E, etc.) and end up having a blast!

Was that supposed to say "can't last forever"?

For me this kind of thing is a trip down memory lane. I will enjoy playing a one-shot once every couple of years, but no more. I wouldn't stand having to play a whole campaign.

I could only dream about getting to play in a campaign like this. The reality for me is that to have such a campaign at all I would have to run it.
