Are there people from whom you keep your gaming activities a secret? If so, why? This is a hobby that demands intense dedication and time in order for one to participate in it and I am interested in knowing how and why people hide this aspect of their lives from people around them. Accordingly, if and when people ask "so what is it that you do?" (when not referring to professional matters), what do you tell them if you don't want them to know about your gaming?

I've never lied but I generally don't go out of my way to let people know what I do. I'll usually just say that I am hanging out with friends or the equivalent. No one pushes and that is usually the end of it.

I game loudly and proudly, hide nothing, bring game books with me when I go out to eat or to read on my break at work, wear gamer gear, pack dice with me as a talisman. I see not point in hiding what I do; to me, that's like hiding the fact that I like to read science fiction or that I like comic book movies.

I think the proper answer is: IT DEPENDS.

Friends and family know about it.

I 've NEVER put it into my CV under: Hobbies (!)

In my professional life, ....it depends on the person.

As far women go... i go with "improvisational theater"

Instant Success!!

I don't hide being a gamer at all.

It's usually pretty obvious; one of the first things you'll see when you walk into my home is a fish bowl filled with dice.

I rarely have to lie directly but in general I keep it hidden from most people-certainly most people in business. There's a great deal of negative public opinion towards the hobby. I don't want to be associated with the average person's image of what D&D is.

Trying to change people's minds and introduce them to rpgs is desirable, but not generally feasible.
