What characters are you thinking about running?

Inspired by Graf's adventures thread, let me ask a question:

What characters are you thinking about running?

Note that we're starting with one PC per player, IIRC.

Personally, I'm liking the "monster pirate" vibe in the Gallows and Bacarte. My top two ideas are:

- a Barcartan bugbear thug (brutal rogue), who hires out as muscle to pirate captains, respectible merchants, and anyone else who can afford him, or...

- an orc pirate from the Laughing Gallows (fighter is the leading class choice, but I've got thoughts on how almost anything other than a wizard could work).

What are you thinking of playing?

I almost started this thread, but I realized I was procrastinating on the whole math thing...

I'm torn; the areas that I'm most interested in are likely to be things that I run. Which means I can't really play in them anyway.

Currently I'm pretty taken with the idea of playing an eladrin paladin from the imperium. Raised by a half-elf clan he feels much more attached to the masses, even as he's watched a generation grow into old age in the time it's taken him to reach his teens.

I'm toying with how estranged he feels from the Imperium, and why. In that regard I love the fact that the portal has suddenly closed; it gives me a lot of flexibility. Was he just here to take a break while he considered his future? To meet a lover for a tryst? Trying to escape an enlistment order?

(Unfortunately Eladrin are manifestly unsuited to be paladins... but the concept doesn't work with any other race... times like this I wish we'd approved swordmage.... :/)

There was no end to his patience and endurance. He played day and night, his obsession was somewhat disquieting. It was less as if he were playing to dispel gloom or beguile tedium than as if he were giving himself up to the fangs of gaming devils."

I've already made up a female Githyanki Tactical Warlord. I've got some of her attitude and mannerisms settled on so far, but still need some work on her goals and origins. She's definitely not the nice healing type of Warlord. She's the military drill instructor who sneers at you to stop bleeding and get back up to attack that monster. Not the super loud type most of the time, but very serious and confident in her superiority. She can curse like a sailor or banter like a noble lady. Looking forward to getting started with her hopefully.

Tactical warlords should be played a lot more. That +x to hit with action point attacks is one of the best abilities in the game. I'm always baffled about why people play pseudo-clerics.

In my mixed live/PbP group, I have a Tiefling tactical warlord similar to your Githyanki, Phoenix. He's a ton of fun to play, both thematically and rules-wise.

I've already rolled up a hobgoblin warlord, thinking "monstrous pirate" like everyone else. But if we get a dozen of those, I might put him on the shelf and do a warlock of some kind.

I’ve got a pretty thoroughly developed human fighter I want to play – a narcissistic spear-wielding warrior with far too much attitude for his own well-being. Inspiration comes from places such as Geralt of the Witcher, Shaft of the movie series, and Roy Greenhilt from Order of the Stick.

I think I can suggest a good place for your character to originate from, once I get more done with writing this giths-and-thids island (studies are killing me at the moment).

I thought tactical warlords were more popular than inspiring ones? Lead the Attack is pretty much one of the best level 1 dailies there is.

We need to add a monstrous ninja island to balance out the monstrous pirates.

I would so totally play a shadar-kai ninja...

I have a hoebrew world I've never played that had such cool Ninjas. Imagine a society like fuedal Japan but populated with cat-people. Humanoid lions, tigers, panthers, cheetahs, etc. The ninjas were all panther types and the ninja wizard support people had black cat familiars. Which is why it was bad luck to see a black cat because that meant there could be a ninja team hunting somebody nearby. When they joined the ninja clan, they held a funeral for themselves and faked their death to cut off any ties to family they might have. They put half of a magical amulet in the casket so that when they died, their body would dissapear and teleport to the casket, leaving nothing but empty clothes and equipment. Too bad I never got to run that world yet.

I'm thinking a doppelganger feylock, born in the Isle of Laughing Gallows and grew up learning how to survive there. He'll have a heavy focus on social skills, and have travelled to the Fey Island encountering a water spirit, who killed his companions, but bestowed a gift of power to him, reflecting the capricious nature of these spirits.

He'll currently be in Daunton, integrating himself there, his goal will be to establish an information network there, a semi-thieves guild, but not involved in petty thievery.

He knows he'll need wealth and power to complete this goal, so he is interested in travelling around to acquire both these things.

The cat ninja island people thing would be an interesting near land; or part of the jade kingdom. The only issue is that it'd have to be NPC only (unless we change the rules on including non-core material).

I wouldn't dump this idea so fast... what if there actually are 5 monsterous pirates, the sole survivors of a shipwreck.

your first adventure could be a treasure hunt; and could each have kickers related to your shared background. One guy has [the strange compass I stole from the navigator] another [I was the first mate and betrayed my captian. Every night when I wake up the room I've slept in smells of dead corpses, and their are puddles of sea water on the floor.... but he's dead. I saw him go down with a spear in his side and a curse on his lips...]
just riffing

This is another great idea for a kicker/goal.
If you added people to your guild you could easily get a little mini-campaign arc going....

Sounds like fun to me. We have all this great monster pirate material, there's no reason our first adventure can't dive right into it.

Also, thought I'd point out the new Dragon article on the bugbear mafia. Looks like lots of stuff we could run with.

Hmmm... the link button isn't working. Here's the URL.

Yeah, especially if I could get my PC to like 2nd level and maybe he can be the NPC giving a quest to the PC's of first level...

That way he's a character, but if I run a game I can involve him as well.

(and of course nobody would know his true identity )

My 1st character is going to be pretty run of the mill. Human wizard... Always wanted to bring my favorite 2ed character forward in the new edition and decided he would be the first character I create (Iridian doesn't count cause he's a pregen). So in this incarnation he'll be a knowledge hunter from Daunton scouring the ruins of pre-Imperial civilization on the isles (particularly interested in the portals on the Isle of Opposition).

I thought about playing a changeling and having multiple identities too. That could be very awesome.

Speaking of changelings, I had another character idea that I'm tempted to replace my fighter with: A doppelganger with a chameleon pet.

Not sure whether I want it as a classic doppelganger infiltrator with a chameleon assistant, a doppelganger wizard with a chameleon familiar, or a doppelganger pirate with a chameleon on its shoulder, though.

I think there are familiar rules coming out at some point. And pet rules are in Martial power right?

Well I'm still agonizing, but I'm thinking of going with a Cleric. Probably a half-elf or human. I'd like him to be very pious almost exalted without being exalted, so he probably wouldn't fit with a monsterous pirate group.

But on the other hand I'd really like to play in a monsterous Pirate group! Hmmm, maybe a nastier Cleric, a Bugbear Cleric? Hmmm, I need to take another look at the pantheon...
