Tapping crossing over to Atlantis?
SUNDAY - OCTOBER 30, 2005

The casts of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis may be headed for something of a change-up after all. Fan reports from this weekend's GABIT event "Amanda Tapping: A Weekend With Her Fans" indicate that the "Samantha Carter" actress may be splitting her time between the two series next season.

In addition, the producers of Stargate SG-1 may be hoping to add a new full-time cast member.

Tapping reportedly told fans that she spoke to SG-1 executive producer Robert Cooper after learning about the show's renewal, and about the fact that each of her co-stars had been approached about returning for Season Ten. Actress Claudia Black ("Vala Mal Doran") has also been approached about signing on, she said. Tapping asked if there was a problem, to which he replied, "No problem -- we just don't know what to do with Sam next season."

Tapping was informed that she would be guaranteed a full 20 episodes next season, and that these will likely be split in some fashion between SG-1 and its spin-off series, Stargate Atlantis, fans reported. Her contract currently remains unsigned.

The actress made a small cameo appearance in the Atlantis Season One episode "Letters From Pegasus," and returns this season to guest star in "Grace Under Pressure."

Meanwhile, Tapping also reported that she has been offered and is considering a leading role on another Canadian series, titled Whistler. The new series is described by its producers as "an action-packed ride through the politics, especially the personal ones, of a high-end resort town, where family and interpersonal pressures are ready to blow. ... It's The O.C. meets Twin Peaks."

Please remember that what we've heard on this breaking story so far is second- and third-hand information, and that Tapping's final status for SG-1's tenth and Atlantis's third season is not yet confirmed. Until then, treat it as you would any rumor.

If it comes to pass, it would certainly make the Stargate franchise one of television's most fluid in terms of sharing cast members and storylines between two different series. GateWorld will report on further developments as they happen!

Atlantis needs something...but another character, I am no so sure about.
Yeah, I'd have to agree with that. The cast is big enough as it is, and I don't need to see the rivalry between Carter and Rodney every week. Much as I'd love to see more of Claudia Black, I'm not sure I want Vala to become a regular on SG-1, either. It still cheeses me off that Sci Fi cancels Farscape and then hires two of the leads to work on Stargate. :\

That woman from farscape was why I quit watching SG-1. A giggly 50 year old woman with pigtails gives me the creeps. (She's probably younger, but she looks really old...)

She was born in 1972. So I guess in Cinema-Television years she is indeed . . . "really old."

I'm 28, but I think Claudia Black is hot! More of her on Stargate is a good thing.

As much I love the character, I think bumping both her and Teal'c to a recurring
gueststars would have been better, really.

They are just struggling to find something for her to do with the new aim.

The other day the rumours that the new season was originally pitched as a spinoff
and not as Season 9 were confirmed by Micheal Shanks. It was supposed to be called
Stargate Command and be even more extreme in the changes in the show's format.

I dont think the fans would have accepted another spin-off so early after Altantis, expecially one that obviously concentrates on the SGC. The great thing about Stargate is its kinda the TNG of the new decade. We have exploration, new races, political storylines, human intrest, lots and lots of nifty technology and gadgets that pop up. Taking out the exploration part would really cripple the show.

That said, I happen to LIKE Season 9, because the changes arent too extreme. The show needs to evolve, but more drastic changes I dont think I'd have approved of.

I absolutly love the fluidity of SG1 and Atlantis. I've always been a huge fan of show crossovers that share universes and characters, and to NOT have the shows this fluid would be a major mistake. The first season of Atlantis had a very good reason for not being as fluid as they want to make it in the future. It needed to establish itself. It's done that so now the shows can mix and match and have storylines the cross the gate, so to speak. It would be bad, IMO if the shows did not do this.

Buffy and Angel for example, could have been much more fluid together, unfortunatly they werent.

I for one look forward to this! HurraH!

Personally, I think it would have been a lot better as a spin-off. Get new faces on the crew, keep a few older ones as guest stars, one or two as regulars, and it'd be a fresh start.

As it stands, I think they should end SG-1 after this season. Maybe move Michael Shanks over to Atlantis, as they could use Daniel there and he'd fit into the cast alright. Carter I'm not quite as sure of... Tapping is very good in her role, but I agree that Carter is a bit redundant to Atlantis.

As a full time cast member yes, as a guest star, maybe not. Carter IS better then Rodney, she's proven it time and time again.

However, I do agree that moving over Daniel Jackson is a better idea. The character has been DYING to go to Atlantis, and each time he gets set to go, something happens to screw it up for him.
