Still really hoping to play in a real long-runner 4e game someday. Hoping to get into Zeitgeist if possible, but I welcome just about anything at this point. Hit me up if you're interested, especially if you're willing to DM. I know at least one other player who would be interested.

If you're still looking, I'm also hankering for some 4e and know someone on RPG.net of like mind. No DM, sadly, but half a group is a step up from my current position...

Anybody use science period in there adventures? Quite regularly. Science is just looking at what happens when you do something, thinking about why it happens, and then checking your conclusion by doing something else and seeing if that matches what you think will happen. W/could a scientist study magic on a scientific level? If so would they be able to help wizards come up with stronger spells in the same level as lower level spells? That is almost the entire basis for the Eberron setting. Magic and its application is studied scientifically and leads to improvements over time. I wouldn't generally allow a character to make a breakthrough of a scale that allows a higher level spell to be cast in a lower level slot however: That sort of innovation probably happens once a millennia or so. But Eberron magical science has determined that wands/spell focuses made of specific magically active materials give a damage bonus to certain energy types in cantrips for example. What scientific ...

Would any of them work as familiars or as paladin steeds? Sure, but a lot of them could easily use the stats of existing D&D animals whose physiology they resemble - a falanx could use a riding dog of wolf's stats, a rapide a cheetah's, a gigantelope a rhinoceros or bison's, a horrane a leopard or lion's and so on. A lot of them also occupy the same ecological niches.

Nice. Now how about the surfbats? I don't recall ever seeing a D&D conversion of those. The vast majority of the creatures in After Earth seem lacking in the special qualities that make for a memorable D&D monster, namely "new and interesting ways to kill the PCs". :p

They were called night terrors I believe. That sounds familiar, hold on while I "check the internet"… …Well we're half right, the beasties were called Night Stalkers.

Ok, now what do you think about my bite damage? Well 2d3 is too low - even regular SRD Hounds have 1d8 and the Trollhound's AD&D stats did more damage than a Yeth Hound or Hell Hound. I would be willing to entertain 1d12 if Freyar prefers that, but currently like my 2d4 better.

Emergency warfare & for fun. Edit: I missed that this was a 3.5 thread instead of 5E, so Inspiration does not apply. However, I would still focus more on the psychological benefits to the paintee instead of a blanket modifier. Flat mechanical benefits rarely offer much in the way of fun. Why not make it a Bond or Personality Trait instead? Describe how you're painting yourself for an upcoming battle, tailor the patterns and colors to the scenario, and get Inspiration. No additional mechanics necessary, and it encourages the player to put some thought into it. As for "emergency warfare"... I don't really know what you mean by that. Warfare is an emergency by definition. If you're talking about a situation where the PCs get ambushed in camp or in town, they aren't likely to have a chance to put on war paint.

Basically war paint when applied to a humanoid cases fear to enemies (I.e. -3 to attacks) and adds +3 to armor for up to 2-3 days per application. What do you think & how might it improved? That is an extremely powerful magic item. It is, effectively, granting +3 AC to all of your allies and +6 to yourself. What is your objective in creating this item?

Sorry, most dogs will swipe with their paws when playing. Sure, but when they want to injure something they use their teeth.

The "Several days" point was referring to the OP's suggested effective duration. Basically war paint when applied to a humanoid cases fear to enemies (I.e. -3 to attacks) and adds +3 to armor for up to 2-3 days per application. I can't think of any other consumable in the game that lasts for "up to 2-3 days", and it seemed a bit excessive.

That’s why I gave it such a small damage number actually. I figured that it would be used rarely if at all! That doesn't really answer the question of why add an attack that the Dragon magazine version didn't possess.

How would it interact with the halfling wish brush from dragon magazine? See the article “magic items of the gnomes & halflings” for 2nd edition rules. What did it do? Do you have stats for it?

Ok then, how about 2d3 for a bite & 1d2 for a paw swipe? Err, the original monster doesn't attack with its paws so why add the ability? Especially as none of the SRD canines have claw attacks.

Or even 1d12? That is quite a large jump from the original's 1d4 dice range. It's also a larger dice range than any of the Medium sized canines in the SRD, which either have 1d6 (Worg, Shadow Mastiff) or 1d8 (Yeth Hound, Hellhound) base bite damage. My thinking was 1d8 would be acceptable since it matched the dice of the SRD "Hounds" but was a bit lacking in ditinctiveness. Plus I liked how 2d4 has the dice sides match that of the AD&D version. Incidentally, the 2E AD&D versions of the aforementioned Hound have different dice ranges from each other and the 3E version - 1d10 for the Hell Hound and 2d4 for the Yeth Hound. Not that it means much in the grand scheme of things.

As a alchemical item??????You keep saying those words. Why does it matter whether it's alchemical or not? Magic items exist in the DMG. They are available wherever the DM decides, at a price determined by the DM. There are no crafting rules in 5E, unless the DM decides to include some, at which point the DM will tell you what you need to do.
  • 05:28 PM - the Jester quoted abe ray in post Potion of undead form
The spells needed mostly. You'll have to check with your DM. If you are the DM, you'll have to decide based on how it works- invisibility? Disguise self? Something more "change type into undead" type of thing? Could this potion be the bases for a prestige class, like tindertwigs for the candle caster? 5e doesn't have prestige classes. Even if it did, in my judgment, making any class, including prestige classes, subclasses, paragon paths, or epic destinies, dependent on a piece of gear is a mistake. What happens when the pc is deprived of that gear? If she has spent the last five levels focused on the class, is losing that gear crippling? How does that make the game more fun?

As a alchemical item?????? Sure, why not?
  • 12:53 AM - Azzy quoted abe ray in post Powdered water?
In a dragon magazine article they had a alchemistical item called “powdered water” basically it’s a powder that when a pinch is put into a waterskin with a drop of water and messaged around produces a gallon of pure drinking water! Now my question is this:how would it work for 5th edition? There doesn't seem like anything that needs to be converted—just use it as-is.

From starfinder there’s the scavenger ooze-unacelius scavengus? Somewhere, we have a word for the various oozes- “Macro” something. “Macrobia”? Then add “seminiverbius”.
  • 08:05 AM - ccs quoted abe ray in post Getar of blasting
What spells would be needed for this item anyway? Same as for a Horn of Blasting I'd imagine.
