  • 06:55 PM - Mistwell quoted ChaosGenerators in post What Things Would You Want in a 5E City Prep Tool?
Thanks for the recommendations I'll take a look at those. I think there is also space for tools that focus on building a city or city adventure and also ones for running games set in them (or helping to run at least) Unless it is a small city I am saying don't bother building an entire city. Instead, find a way to build just the major touchstones, and to generate on the fly sample city blocks, rather than detailing out an entire city 90% of which will never be seen by players.

I'm going to put this poll in as many places as I can and collate the results.Generators as in something online intended to replace my own dice and charts? None, unless they were customizable to the point where it'd be quicker to write my own (which, for a few things e.g. random magic items, I have).

Three years is longer than I've ran any campaign! How often are these campaigns being played? and is it the same characters generally? The longest I have played in has been around five years, that has been a while back, ones I have run, on and off for 30+ years, usually they are around 2 1/2 years long. Usually once every week to once a month depending, if you do a play-by-post, everyday almost; it takes a while to build a group that will play whatever you want to play, and we do get lazy and play board games a lot. As far as having the same characters, depends on the scenario, characters can die or players get bored with them and change.

I was much happier when I moved to a milestone approach for XP and just let my players know when they've levelled. As we keep everyone at the same level it just removed a headache. This is harder for games where they spend XP directly....Ye I'm running savage worlds atm so it's 1-3 xp a session spent in groups of 5.

What things cause you the most problems when running a game? Vehicles (and mounts). I don't know why, but I've never felt a scene with a vehicle or mount as anything other than simply a way to get around has really worked out right.

I think mine would be explaining why my NPCs do certain things. I know why they've done something but making it significant or obvious to PCs can sometimes be a challenge.Players upsetting the key NPC. Trying to then figure out a way to get the same outcome without making it seem to railroaded causes headaches.

  • 12:26 PM - Ilbranteloth quoted ChaosGenerators in post How Have You Spent Excess Gold in Downtime?
So given 5E characters have lots of gold but (typically) can't spend it on magic items... What have your characters been spending their gold on in their downtime? Or want to spend it on? Beyond lavish parties that is This thread again... To start with, all the sorts of things that normal people spend coin on. Their first adventure is like winning the lottery, so they can buy property, homes for their family, horses, wagons or carts. They can be Oprah, “you get a cart! And you get a cart!” Of course, parties and frivolous spending. Also much (most?) of the treasure is in something other than coins. And big and bulky, and the value varies depending on who you can find to buy it. In a recent tomb they found, it had tapestries, rugs, pottery, weapons, art objects, jewelry, all sorts of things, but very little in the way of coins. Much of it they couldn’t get on the first trip. They had to purchase some carts, mules, and hirelings to get the rest out. Coming back with lots of wealth also brings all ...
