Morrus attempts to update his PHB

Well, that was fun

As an experiment, I decided to "update" my PHB. Armed with a pair of scissors, a glue stick, a stapler, a printout of the compiled PHB errata, and a pen, I set to work.

OK, so I'm not recommending that anyone try this. The first thing you'll notice is that the printouts don't match the size of the text blocks they're replacing (especially when additional text is involved) so I ended up creating hinged sections of pages using staples. It looks more like a pop-up book, now. Of course, there are also many cases when things can be glued over the top of the original page directly.

Here's what my PHB now looks like. Again, this is NOT recommended! This particular page was one of the worst hit, and has ten pieces of paper stuck or stapled to it; you can see some of "hinged" pieces as well as sections stuck directly over the old text.

You might wonder why I've suddenly decided to do this now - well, I figured that since the Rules Compendium was coming out soon, if the worst happened and it completely ruined my PHB I'd soon have a replacement. Plus, I was bored and remembered some of my AD&D 1E books which had cutouts from DRAGON magazine stuck in them and felt a bit nostalgic.

Hilarious, a bit frightening, and also very indicative of why I feel my physical copies of a number of my 4E books are no longer valid as game references.

I find a small three ring binder works remarkably well for keeping all the errata in one place. Then you can simply use a highlighter in the original book to remind you that there is errata in the errata binder.

I am wondering what madness overcame you to want to do this? :)

That sort of cutting-and-taping actually worked reasonably well all the way up until the May 2010 update -- the changes were *mostly* minor, and the new blocks were *close* to the size of the old ones. I taped in all the little changes, but gave up when the May update came out with all those big blocks of text that replaced littler blocks of text.

Now I just pencil in "see errata", and stuff the rule updates in the back. Which makes it feel a lot like older editions, with all the flipping back and forth between things!

Ouch

Makes me wonder about how ''useful'' my 1st print PHB is, compared to teh online tools I frequently use.

Not that much anymore.

I've used "tack-it" instead of staples... worked quite OK. Sometimes I had to use adhesive tape though (the resistance page was one of them), as were the new mount and flying rules in the DMG.
