There are always exceptions to the rule. Someone that expects weight gain like that may handle it better than some that see it go up a pound or two and get depressed.

I actually accomplished my first New Years Resolution. One resolution was to post a game-related blog entry every day in January... done!

Now on to February, and finishing an "Ecology" article.

Its a bit late, but...

I hereby resolve to never again participate in any online thread dealing with piracy of intellectual property.

Despite my expertise- I'm an Entertainment Lawyer of several years experience- I can't convince anyone to change their ways, and the only thing I succeed in doing is raising my blood pressure.

My resolution is still 1440x900. It's highly unlikely to change unless I get a new computer.

My wakeup call wasn't any mod warning, blood-pressure reading or anything like that...

It was this cartoon:

xkcd - A Webcomic - Duty Calls

THEN I looked at what I was doing- HAD done over the course of several piracy/IP threads. That's when I made this resolution.

I'm doing so-so with other items on my list. The exercise one was my most important one - resisting the urge to hibernate during Jan and Feb is really important to my mental health in wintertime.
Kinda forgot about this thread!

Anyway, my resolutions really are just for the toughest two months of the year (Jan and Feb) and the above summary really does apply to the whole two months. As is strangely typical, my exercise level has fallen off in March and April, but as soon as I wrestle this lingering cold to the ground I will get back on the exercise wagon.

I'm really avoiding D&D stuff recently ... I have cancelled sessions, I am not doing my "homework" and I was only relieved when it turned out that there were two straight months where no one's calendars were lining up. Don't know what I'm going to do about that ...

Hmm resolution feedback:

Hiking averaging 2 - 3 2 hour walks a month, so not too shabby. Really enjoying it aswell. Which helps.

Made an Easter Resolution today, more time in the Gym...

Insanity considered for next year, or possibly 2011: The Freedom Swim

I didn't make a New Years resolution. I started trying to lose weight a couple of weeks before and just kept going. I'm still sticking to it. I'm averaging about 4 pounds lost a month. My goal is to get to 16 total by the 21st of this month. It's not a lot but slow and steady wins the race sometimes.

Decided that eat less and exercise more was the way to go. I also don't deprive myself of what I want. Does it slow the process? I'm sure it does but I don't go on binges because I can't fight the craving anymore.

You mean the method every MD has been suggesting since...well..forever...actually works?

That is also excellent methodology. If you don't satisfy your cravings every once in a while, they just grow and grow until one day, you find yourself binging. Cravings are the only monsters I know of that grow when you DON'T feed them.

I hope you find an exercise routine that is relatively easy to maintain.

I found my best results with mixing weight training (which builds muscle which in turn burns calories faster) and cardiovascular training (which helps your body run more efficiently). I'd mix upper body weightlifting with lower body cardio (like bike or walking), then on my next workout day, it would be lower body weightlifting with upper body cardio (or swimming). That way, you exercise the entire body without reducing any one part to pain or exhaustion.

I'd also examine my diet very carefully. I've done all kinds of things long term- I don't drink sodas, I've removed lots of processed foods and salt from my diet, etc. I've even been cooking more.

And cooking, paradoxically, is one of the best things you can do when trying to lose weight. You learn portion control, and you have absolute control over ingredients.

In the interest of full disclosure, I've been fighting with my weight since I was 13, and every time I control my eating and boost my exercise level I drop weight. I just keep getting my routines interrupted. AND I still have a problem with portion control- I eat healthy food, I just eat too much of it. I've been within 13lbs of my "ideal" weight, and I've been 100lbs over it.

So, best wishes and lots of luck!

well my new years resolutions were to
1. go to the gym more.
2. add one more player to my D&D group, preferably Herb (a former player who dropped out for a combination of RL and 4e dislike.)

Im running about 20 miles a month, and have lost 10 lbs since feb 1.
Herb is back with the group, although we lost a different player, and gave up on adding two others.

my resolutions should have included keeping my job, but this has given me more time at the gym.
